Dinner and a Movie: City of Gold and Guelaguetza
Meet Maite at the ArcLight Hollywood at 6:30pm on Saturday 4/2 to watch City of Gold and participate in a Q&A with Pulitzer Prize-winning food critic Jonathan Gold and director Laura Gabbert. Then, continue the conversation the next day at 1:00pm LACMA where the group will trace the history of food in Mexico from pre-Hispanic times, to colonization and the influence of European foods and dining customs, to modern Los Angeles and the important role that immigrants play in its artistic and culinary landscape. After the tour, head to the James Beard Award winning restaurant, Guelaguetza, on Mr. Golds list of best restaurants in the city, to continue the conversation and indulge in a family style feast.

Please note that though part of this class meets at LACMA it is not LACMA organized.

Grilled Cactus Salad
Oaxacan Style Sauteed Grasshoppers

ABOUT CITY OF GOLD:
CITY OF GOLD chronicles Pulitzer Prize-winning restaurant critic Jonathan Golds relationship to his beloved and sprawling metropolis, Los Angeles. Gold has long been adored in his hometown for his cultural writing about LAs hidden culinary treasures; he was one of the first critics to review small family owned restaurants in far-flung ethnic enclaves with as much passion as the haute cuisine establishments of Beverly Hills.

With a stroke of his pen, hes changed the lives of countless immigrant chefs, newly discovered by voracious foodies who avidly track his reviews. CITY OF GOLD explores the rigor, knowledge, and curiosity that make Golds style of criticism nationally recognized. Mapping Los Angeles through his Odyssey-like quests for new food experiences, Jonathan Gold reveals a complex, paradoxical urban landscape that will surprise newcomers and locals alike.

Featuring celebrity chefs Roy Choi, David Chang, and Ludo Lefebvre, as well as the chefs and owners behind some of Golds favorites: Jitlada (Thai), Guelaguetza (Oaxacan), Meals by Genet (Ethiopian), and Chengdu Taste (Sichuan). CITY OF GOLD offers the rare opportunity to discover the true Los Angeles through the eyes of its foremost cultural writer, and most loyal fan.

CITY OF GOLD is directed by Laura Gabbert. Producers are Laura Gabbert and Holly Becker, Executive Producers are Braxton.

ABOUT GUELAGUETZA:
GUELAGUETZA is a restaurant, boutique market, and an advocate of Oaxacan culture in the Koreatown of Los Angeles. It first opened its doors in 1994 by immigrant husband and wife Fernando Lopez and Maria Monterrubio and is now run by their children, Paulina, Fernando Jr., Elizabeth and Bricia Lopez. Their hard work, dedication and love for their culture have earned them features and mentions in publications such as Los Angeles Times, Jonathan Golds 101 essential restaurants, The New York Times, GQ Magazine, Esquire, Los Angeles Magazine, Oprah Magazine, The New Yorker, Travel and Leisure, Sunset Magazine and others. Most recently, Guelaguetza was awarded The James Beard Award for the American Classics category, the most prestigious award in the culinary industry.
