Mark Boling's TRIO LIFE
From Knoxville, Tennessee, we present Mark Boling's Trio Life, with guitarist Mark Boling, drummer Keith Brown, and bassist John Hamar in concert at the Jazz Cave Friday, April 1 at 8pm.

TRIO LIFE originated in Knoxville, Tennessee, several decades ago, soon after guitarist Mark Boling began teaching jazz at the University of Tennessee in Knoxville. The trios drummer, Keith Brown, and bassist Jon Hamar are also UT jazz faculty members. Performing together in many styles and contextsNew Orleans, blues, rock, funk, free, fusion, bop, and big bandthe trio has been blessed to play regularly with great musicians like Donald Brown, Gregory Tardy, Jerry Coker, Zim Ngqawana and the Knoxville Jazz Orchestra. This wealth of shared performance and teaching experience influences their ongoing musical conversation. Over the years, Boling has honed a repertoire of original music and standards with roots in the great guitar trios led by Kenny Burrell, Wes Montgomery, Jim Hall, John Scofield and Pat Metheny.

MARK BOLING is a jazz guitarist, teacher, composer, and author. A veteran sideman with pianist Donald Brown, Boling played in Knoxville-based bands and recorded with Brown on three records for the French label Space Time Records. Boling also enjoyed a rewarding collaboration with drummer Keith Brown and bassist Rusty Holloway in the Boling, Brown, & Holloway trio. Boling has released three recordings as a leader (Trio Life, 2012; Tune Me, 2004; Evidence, 2000). Mark Boling is an associate professor of music at the University of Tennessee and serves as coordinator of the jazz studies program.

KEITH BROWN directs the UT Jazz Big Band and small jazz combos. He also studied with Alan Dawson, George Marsh, and Ed Soph on a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts. Brown is an active jazz performer and has played with Charlie Spivak, Mose Alison, Diane Schure, Jerry Coker, Tommy Flanagan and others. He is very involved with the Percussive Arts Society and has contributed articles to its official publication.

JON HAMAR is a versatile artist who has been recognized for his ability to find a tasteful unique voice in any musical situation. Jon earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in Double Bass Performance from Eastern Washington University under the tutelage of Roma Vayspapir and graduated from the Eastman School of Music with a Masters degree in Jazz and Contemporary Media, studying with Jeff Campbell, James Vandermark, Harold Danko, Clay Jenkins and Fred Sturm.
