Celebrate Ellery Thompson's 117th Birthday at our Fund-raiser Party to restore Racing to Market it's next Saturday, April 9, 6 to 8 PM
Raw oysters, mojitos, birthday cake -- what a swell party it will be! (And thank you Fishers Island Oysters, Real McCoy Rum, et al. for your generous contributions). Come to our party to celebrate local artist, fishermen, & writer Ellery Thompson.
Last November, we were given a beautiful painting, Racing to Market, by Ellery Thompson (1899-1987). It needs help. More serious than the heavy coating of nicotine, areas of think paint are starting to flake. We need to raise up-to $4,500 to restore the painting - the earliest and one of the finest Ellery Thompson paintings we've ever seen. This birthday party is a fund-raising effort! Currently we're getting the Ellery Thompson show together -- about 20 paintings from Andrew Blacker's collection will be for sale beginning at the event next Saturday night.
You all know Capt'n Ellery - the Stonington fisherman immortalized by Joseph Mitchell with two 1940s-era profiles in The New Yorker; a painter, who also wrote two autobiographies about his own experiences as a dragger-boat captain plying the waters in and around New London. Read Joseph Mitchell's profiles of Ellery Thompson HERE (download and rotate!).
Artist Christopher Dunklee will stop in to talk about Ellery's influence on his work.
Historian Steve Jones first met Ellery in the 1950s. Steve will tell about Ellery, his paintings, and the work of being a dragger fisherman. (Watch for Steve and Marion Krepcio's interviews this week in The Day.)
Please come to our party! It will be fun, delicious, and we need your help.
Joseph Mitchell wrote: "Ellery--he says he is called Captain Thompson or Mr. Thompson only by people who want to get something out of him--is captain and owner of the gasoline dragger Eleanor.... He is also a self-taught oil painter.... His paintings, most of which are marines, hang in fishermen's homes and dockside saloons all over eastern Connecticut."
And now in museums.
