Roots Of Our Rhythms
For over 3,000 years women were the primary percussionists in the
ancient world; the first named drummer in history was a Mesopotamian priestess named Lipushiau.  She lived in the city-state of Ur in 2380 BC and used a small round frame drum to lead liturgical chanting.  In the book When Women Were Drummers, author Layne Redmond details the history of female drummers, including the fact that in every ancient Mediterranean civilization she studied it was a goddess who transmitted to humans the gift of making music. One of the main techniques for connecting to this power of inspiration was drumming.

Historically, there have been periods of time when women were banned from participating in drumming and music - excluding women from professions of composing, teaching and performing. Recent history has  seen a dramatic rise in the number of professional women musicians, but there are still few women pursuing drumming. The Womens Drum Center is dedicated to empowering women through percussion.

The concert will feature pieces that demonstrate the skill, humor and healing energy of many wonderful women composers and arrangers.  The performers will honor their connections to the drummers who came before and seek to inspire the next generation of women drummers.

WDC Executive Director Marisa Cuneo-Linsly sums it up The WDCs focus on original compositions and arrangements supports a womens vision of drumming.   This focus fosters creativity and collaboration, and creates dynamic opportunities for growth. Every participant at the drum center continues to shape our music, and our history. We nurture and inspire the next generations of women drummers. This year marks the 25th anniversary of the Womens Drum Center. During that time our repertoire has been shaped by female music directors, female performers and composers. We continue to be connected to  each of them through the music and drumming.

The chorus of the song Motherbeat, which will be
performed concert night, is the inspiration for the concert.
