New London Maritime Society (NLMS) invites all area lighthouse stewards & stakeholders to attend a first Long Island Sound Lighthouse Symposium. The meeting takes place Wednesday, April 20, from 12 noon to 5 PM, at New London's Custom House Maritime Museum, 150 Bank Street, New London, Connecticut. The event is free to lighthouse stakeholders but requires prior registration.
This meeting provides a forum for lighthouse stewards, tour-givers, curators, and friends to learn about other regional lighthouse groups and sites, share information, and plan together for the season ahead. Representatives from the US Coast Guard and General Services Administration (GSA) will be here, as well as from lighthouses from New York to Massachusetts.
Attendees are encouraged to describe their involvement with lighthouses and also share information from their site, tours, or lighthouse activity. Several attendees already have agreed to speak.
~Sally Snowman, Ph.D., U.S. Coast Guard, Keeper of Boston Light
will speak about this year's 300th anniversary of the Boston Light -- the country's oldest and the only one with an actual keeper (Sally).
~ Linda Danto, director of the National Lighthouse Museum, will give a report on this new museum on Staten Island, New York.
~ Tiffany Brevard, national coordinator for National Historic Lighthouse Preservation Act (NHLPA) for the GSA, and Meta Customs, the program's regional administrator from Boston, will present an update on the 2000 Lighthouse Preservation Act.
~ Chris Cryder, Outreach Coordinator for the Preserve Plum Island Coalition will speak about the Coalition's work to preserve Plum Island and its lighthouse for public access.
~ Nick Korstad, the owner of Borden Flats Light, in Fall River, Massachusetts, will speak about converting his 'spark plug' lighthouse into a Bed & Breakfast.
~ David Zapatka created 'Plummy' as the mascot for the Plum Beach Lighthouse friends group in North Kingston, Rhode Island. David will talk about Plummy's effectiveness in fund- and consciousness-raising as well as the group's state lighthouse license-plate program.
~ Current USCG Aid to Navigation team members will talk about the work of maintaining the lighthouses on Long Island Sound. Tom Rysedorph, a retired USCG lighthouse keeper, will explain what life was like living at several LIS lighthouses.
Events at the Custom House related to this meeting include the opportunity to meet historian Eric Jay Dolin, who will give a presentation about his new book Brilliant Beacons: A History of the American Lighthouse later that evening. An exhibition of David Zapatka's time-lapse photographs of regional lighthouses at night will be on view at the Custom House Maritime Museum. The Custom House Maritime Museum also has a permanent exhibition on lighthouses.

New London Maritime Society is hosting a fund-raising event following the symposium: Dinner with Eric Jay Dolin, from 5:30 to 7 PM. A $100 donation includes dinner with Mr. Dolin, a copy of his new book 'Brilliant Beacons' and admission to the book talk later in the evening. Space is limited to 12 guests. NLMS was founded 33 years ago with the creation of the Custom House Maritime Museum -- a museum and community center dedicated to preserving and celebrating the life and history of maritime New London.
Six years ago, New London Maritime Society received ownership of New London Lighthouse. During the next few years, we received ownership of Race Rock and Ledge Lighthouse. The management of Ledge Lighthouse is shared with the Ledge Light Foundation, which has developed and which hosts a fine museum on the premises. It is our duty and intent to keep and make each of these historic structures reasonably open to the Public.
