JAZZ LATINO @ GALERIA WEST with Pianist GONZALO GRAU & THE VENEZUELAN COLLECTIVE TRIO in Concert
Image a cozy concert venue where, on the last Friday of each month you are surrounded by inspiring fine art as you enjoy an intimate concert experience with the best of Latin jazz from NYC and beyond. Teatro Si brings to you the new monthly Jazz Latino @ Galeria West concert series. On Friday, February 26, 2016 at 7:30pm the acclaimed Venezuelan pianist Gonzalo Grau and the The Venezuelan Collective Trio take the stage at the unique Galeria West Art & Music Gallery, located at 111 Quimby Street in downtown Westfield, NJ.

Gonzalo Grau began his musical studies at the age of three in Caracas. Along his musical journey he developed skills in many instruments, from the viola da gamba and the cello to the flamenco cajón and his principal instrument, the piano.

A Berklee College Suma Cum Laude, Gonzalo has established himself as a multi-instrumentalist and his varied credits include performances with Venezuelan music projects like Maroa, Schola Cantorum de Venezuela, Camerata de Caracas and the Simón Bolivar National Youth Orchestra, jazz icon Maria Schneider and the Latin jazz giant Timbalaye. As a music director he leads two projects of his own, "Plural" (Latin jazz-Flamenco-Venezuelan fusion) and "La Clave Secreta" (salsa fusion), nominated for the 2008 Grammys in the Best Tropical Album category. As a recording artist, Grau has participated in over eighty productions that bridge both classical and popular music worlds.

His most recent productions include the studio recording of Golijov's La Pasión según San Marcos (winner of the ECHO award 2010), the album "México" of Rolando Villazón (winner of the ECHO award 2011), and Nazareno with pianists Katia and Marielle Labeque, all released by the German label Deutsche Grammophon. Also the production of West Side Story with the Labeque sisters (winner of the Choc the Classica) under KLM label.

The Venezuelan Collective Trio, was created over 17 years ago, when three young musicians from Caracas; Gonzalo Grau on piano, Alvaro Benavides on bass and Pablo Bencid on drums coincidentally reunited in Boston, at the prestigious Berklee College of Music.
It was back then when the experimentation and the fun began.  Turning jazz standards into Latin styles, twisting classic tunes into funky new arrangements, and composing original material that showcase not only what we know today as Latin-Jazz, but also showing the potential of Venezuelan folklore as a fusion ingredient.  The trios repertoire travels from the old classics to the contemporary, but always with originality in the arrangements.
One interesting feature to this Jazz-Trio sound, is the use of backing vocals or coros as an extra spice and color, making the music contagious and close to Caribbean and Latin American folkloric traditions.

Also enjoy the current fine art exhibition at Galeria West with the abstract acrylic on canvas works by South American artist Carlos Ivan Cruz on display till February 27, 2016,. Also enjoy the creations of a  variety of local and international artists currently on display at the gallery.

Concert tickets are priced at $20. We recommend enjoying a fine meal or dessert at one of several fine restaurants in downtown Westfield before or after the show. Event proceeds benefit programming efforts at Teatro Si, a 501(c) 3 not for profit organization.
