Wild Iris *Album Release Party* // The Painted Horses, Big Bear
After two and a half years of writing and performing together, Wild Iris are extremely proud to present their first full-length album to the world! The album's release date is April 19, 2016. We will be having a CD release party at the legendary Kuumbwa Jazz Center the following Friday night (4/22) at 8:00 P.M. Sharing the stage with us will be local favorites, The Painted Horses & Big Bear.

We want to thank each and every one of you for your support, without it we wouldn't have been able to get this album off the ground and into your hands! Our crowdfunding efforts exceeded our expectations and we are proud to say the recording was entirely donation-based! Also a tremendous THANK YOU to all the friends who produced, performed on, or provided artwork/inspiration for this project.

Thanks for supporting local music!

Wild Iris (wildirissantacruz.com):

Wild Iris is the culmination of efforts from Bryan Shelton and Kate Mullikin who formed the band in the fall of 2013 after meeting at a beachside convenience store. Bryan was playing a big, black guitar and Kate started improvising a melody to compliment it. They hadnt shared more than a few words before they were writing their next song. Bryan already had the name Wild Iris in mind and Kate dug the double meaning, evoking the image of a flower and an eyeball. They adopted the moniker, released their home recorded debut EP in 2014 and began gigging with a back-up band. Kates poetic instincts provided the melodic structure for Bryan to build his flat picking under  a style gleamed from years of practice and time well spent listening to Mississippi John Hurt, Woody Guthrie and Ramblin Jack Elliott, the latter with whom Wild Iris has shared the stage.
Onstage, the band exuded a kind of therapeutic honesty, which when mixed with their elegant musicality went a long way with the locals and they were encouraged to pursue a professionally recorded debut full length. The new, self-titled LP was produced by Andy Zenczak at Gadgetbox Recording Studio where Wild Iriss rustic arrangements were imbued with the rich sound of analogue gear, often accompanied by upright bass, banjo, fiddle and percussion.

The Painted Horses (thepaintedhorsesmusic.com):

The Painted Horses are a rising folk band from the Santa Cruz Mountains in California.  Denys Kozakis and Natosha Wengreen discovered their mutual love for songwriting and singing harmonies and started the project along with their good friend and musical partner Jon Payne on bass in 2014.  The band regularly performs as a trio, but have also been known to perform with a full band depending on the show and for recordings. The Painted Horses strong songwriting and harmonies seem to connect them mostly with a folk genre that is unique and seemingly all their own.

Big Bear (facebook.com/bigbearluke):

Big Bear; aka Luke Kinney (member of popular Santa Cruz local band "Abalone Grey") is a true character indeed. Luke hits all the emotion buttons from happy to sad and the awkwardness in between. He is releasing his first album in March 2016 under the name, Big Bear. "That's my nickname given to me by my close music friends, and I feel like it sticks pretty well. All I want to do is write songs and rub my back on a couple trees", explains Kinney. Humor is definitely a huge part of his performance as well as incorporating heartfelt imagery and tear provoking one-liners. Big Bear is an experience that will pull your heart strings and make you remember what it's like to be human again.
