Sumi Workshop with Louise Kikuchi

Join sumi artist and Thought Patterns participant Louise Kikuchi for a day of sumi demonstrations and learning in the BIMA Classroom.

Sumi is the carbon-based ink used in the painting and calligraphy of China, Japan and Korea. The medium uses water to create the ink, but unlike western water color, the ink bonds with the paper and, once painted, the image is permanent. In this workshop, participants will try the medium, experience the calligraphic gesture and experiment with the creative potential of the line.

The artist considers painting as a continuation of the long tradition of making marks, starting with the drawings of deer and bison in the ancient caves of Lascaux. The question for today's artist is to give form and meaning to brush strokes. The lines and dots of her paintings can be likened to breathing, in that they are sequential, rhythmic and in a sense, rhymed.

She was born and raised in Hawaii and has lived in Tokyo, Paris and Seattle, as well as other cities in the United States. The artist holds a Ph.D. in French Phonetics from the University of California at Santa Barbara.
