The Spirit of Vaudeville

Join us for an evening of merriment as Richard Stillman and his friend Flip Peters take you back to the days of Vaudeville!

The Spirit of Vaudeville is a musical variety show that celebrates the vaudevillians of the jazz age. The tale is told through banjo strumming, tap dancing, storytelling, ukulele and mandolin solos, and wacky Charleston dances.

Richard performed as an actor, ukulele player and tap dancer in the Kennedy Center production of "Lady Be Good".
He was cast in the same role that Ukulele Ike did in the 1920's. Ukulele Ike appears in "The Spirit of Vaudeville".

"The Spirit of Vaudeville opens with a singing, banjo strumming, tap dancing rendition of the 1920's hit "The Charleston." I learned the song from the great vaudeville string musician, Roy Smeck who was in Al Jolson's talking picture "The Jazz Singer". Some of the characters in the show were actual vaudevillians and some of them I made up. You get to decide which is which. This musical variety show has a lively quality but there are poignant moments as well. Each of the musical numbers is introduced with a short story that I act out to guitar accompaniment. The audience will leave the theater with their hearts a bit lighter as they have just been touched by The Spirit of Vaudeville"
