Chocolate has been an integral part of American history. Not only was the cocoa bean discovered in the Americas and brought to Europe by Columbus, but 17th and 18th-century Americans actually saw chocolate as an important part of their everyday diet. Culinary historian and writer Joyce White will explore the rich cultural history of chocolate from its ancient beginnings in Mesoamerica to the present day, with particular emphasis on how it was enjoyed by early Baltimoreans like Homewood's Carroll family.
The interactive presentation will be followed by a tasting of five historic chocolate preparations: a 17th-century style Spanish hot chocolate, an 18th-century style tart, a 19th-century style cake, a 20th-century milk chocolate truffle and the latest 21st-century chocolate incarnations.
The program is presented in conjunction with Homewood Museum's special focus exhibition "Curating the Carrolls," which participants will be able to view after the tasting.
