Berlin Cowboys
BERLIN COWBOYS, a play dealing with the audacious and controversial exploits of the CIA in post-WW II Berlin, will have its world premiere at the Write Act Repertory Theater, March 30-April 22, 2012.
Written by Willard Manus and directed by Iris Merlis, BERLIN COWBOYS is based on an actual historical event. In 1953, at the height of the Cold War when Berlin was divided into four zones--American, Russian, French and British--the CIA station attempted to dig a half-mile-long tunnel under the US/USSR demarcation line and tap into the KGB's telex and telephone lines with Moscow.
The scheme was a daring and dangerous one. The CIA had to figure out a way to build a tunnel deep beneath East German soil, knowing full well that if the KGB detected it, it might trigger an angry and violent military response.
BERLIN COWBOYS recaptures the glory days of the CIA, when the organization was young and frisky, unafraid to take on the vaunted KGB at its own game. At the same time, the play does not shy away from pointing up the shortcomings of the CIA team--a team that not only took reckless chances but failed to protect itself from KGB penetration.
The people who were involved in the Berlin spy tunnel caper went on to dominate American intelligence for decades to come. Their influence on global events can be felt even today, in the first part of the 21st century.
While BERLIN COWBOYS has all the elements of a Graham Greene thriller, it mostly focuses on the human dynamics of the story, the personal rivalries that turned the CIA station into a veritable battleground. BERLIN COWBOYS stars Sophie A. Bell, Nikki Bohm, Marc Cervania, Tyler Cook, *John Long, *Rico Simonini, *Cindy MarTODAY: Rain City Rock Camp for Girls Volunteer Meet & Greet at 6:00pm in the alley behind the U bookstore.
