Cult Of Point Break Society is a musical repertory company that selects works of great rock and roll and performs them.  Over two nights in April they'll take on  the entire recorded oeuvre of the Velvet Underground. The greatest cult band of them all; the band that inspired a thousand bands that inspired ten thousand more. The American Beatles if you will.

Founding member Rich Adkins writes:
COPBS began back in 2004  with an idea to cover a weird record that I thought was great, Slint's "Spiderland" Interesting idea, right? Take an utterly obscure band, with only two albums and two songs to their credit, and revive their music? As it turns out, that's exactly why all of us had to do it. It was a total subversion of the whole cover/tribute band idea and image. Remember one of those times you met someone who likes some weird band that no one likes except for you? Chances are you developed a connection with that person, no matter how different they might have been in all other ways from you. That's the vein we're trying to tap into here; that experience of improbably connecting with another person over a forgotten or unjustly ignored work of art. As more and more people were drawn to the project, the idea began to change and grow; in our conversations so many names of records we'd loved came up; "you should do this, no you should do this..." it was mind boggling to consider how many great rock records exist in the shadowy margins... So I decided to create a repertory company , similar to a classical repertory company that, rather than playing great works of Mozart and Beethoven, plays great works of rock n' roll. Every year I ask players from the Boston area to come together and re-create the original spirit and energy of a recognized, perhaps ignored masterpiece from the rock canon. Projects we've floated for consideration range all over the map, the one commonality being the remarkable quality of the material, and the presence of a fervent cult following that has developed around the material; the not-quite critical mass that recognizes that a given record is in fact, a classic work and worthy of revival.

There have been some strange coincidences around the COPBS over the years; After we did Slint in 2004, Slint got back together and did a world tour. When they came to Boston, we all went to see them. From the stage at the Roxy, Brian asked the audience "Are we as good as the Slint tribute band?" Big Star reunited and made a record of new material after our show in 2005. We performed Television's "Marquee Moon" in 2008. The following year, when Richard Lloyd came to town, and declared a few days in advance that his band had quit on him, Matt Girard and I ended up backing him at Church of Boston on bass and drums. Now we can't take direct responsibilty for any of this... but these things did happen...

So this year we are performing the entire recorded oeuvre of the Velvet Underground. The greatest cult band of them all; the band that inspired a thousand bands that inspired ten thousand more. The American Beatles, if you ask me. Let's make it brand new once again.
