Événement

OrcaTour 2015 OLYMPIA "Adventures with Orcas in the North Pacific, from Stubbs to Iceberg" Presentation by Erich Hoyt,
Erich Hoyt got to know three families of killer whale pods in 1973 off Northern Vancouver Island, witnessed the last captures in the Northwest, and spent 10 summers with orcas, as told in his classic book Orca: The Whale Called Killer. Since 1999 he has helped direct the Far East Russia Orca Project, based on the other side of the North Pacific from B.C. and Washington State. There, a young team of Russian whale scientists have photo-IDed some 1500 orcas, including three all-white orcas; published papers on their dialects and social behavior; and tried to stem the gold rush of captures for aquariums in China, Japan and Russia. Included in the talk will be outstanding, rare killer whale images, video and unforgettable stories.

This is Erich's first return to Olympia since he was a keynote speaker at a legendary orca symposium in 1976. Join us for this rare and historic event. The Olympia event is the third stop on Orca Tour 2015, a series of presentations around The Whale Trail.

Erich's books will be on sale at the event and can be signed.

Erich's talk in Olympia is presented by The Whale Trail, Washington Foundation for the Environment, Ravenwind Farms, and Taylor Shellfish.

Orca Tour 2015 also includes stops in Saturna BC (10/3), Sidney BC (10/6), Tacoma WA (10/11), and Seattle WA (10/13).

About The Whale Trail

The Whale Trail (www.thewhaletrail.org) is a series of sites along the North American west coast to watch orcas and other marine mammals from shore.

Our goals are to increase awareness that our marine waters are home to orcas and other species; connect visitors to orcas, other marine wildlife and their habitat; inspire stewardship and build community; promote land-based whale watching. Our over-arching goal is to ensure the southern resident orcas do not go extinct.

The Whale Trail provides simple, powerful, and long-lasting reminders to visitors and residents alike that orcas and other whales live in our waters.  Through our current sites and signs, including two on every Washington State ferry, we reach more than 22 million people each year. We are working with planning teams in British Columbia, Oregon and California to extend The Whale Trail along the north american west coast.

The Whale Trail is a 501(c)3 organization registered in Washington State.
