L'Alliance française de Toronto vous invite à découvrir Hampaté & Sahel Blues le vendredi 5 février, pour un concert de musiques sénégalaises, aux accents métissés de la région de Saint Louis.
Mapathé Gaye, de son vrai nom, est né en 1980 de père walo-walo (d'origine peulh) et de mère leboue. Il est envoyé à Dagana (région de Saint-Louis) chez une tante paternelle qui aura pour charge de l'élever. C'est ici qu'il s'initiera à ce qui fait sa vie aujourd'hui : la musique. Pour comprendre son inspiration, on doit se pencher sur la ville de Dagana, capitale du Wallo, caractérisée par son brassage ethnique et culturel. Mapathé assure que ce melting-pot dans lequel il a baigné toute son enfance l'a influencé dans ses goûts musicaux.
En 1998, entrainé par la mode du hip-hop, il forme un groupe avec des amis. Mais perfectionniste, il se rend compte qu'il lui manque certaines bases essentielles et entre au conservatoire de Dakar en 2000.
Cinq ans plus tard, il en sort comme guitariste-compositeur. Riche de ses enseignements et expériences, il excelle dans l'art de marier les sons du jazz et des rythmes and blues aux mélodies et harmonies des sons du Sahel. Il commence à jouer en solo, avec sa guitare, dans les bars et restaurants dakarois. Après quelques succès de Youssou Ndour, Baba Maal, Ismael Lo, il joue très rapidement ses propres compositions. C'est en 2007 qu'il forme le groupe Hampaté & le Sahel-Blues : amalgame entre son vrai nom, Mapathé et celui d'Amadou Hampaté Bâ. Un hommage personnel à ce défenseur de la culture orale africaine, et peulh en particulier, à ce grand sage du Sahel.
Depuis lors, le groupe sillonne Dakar et ses environs, présent dans tous les festivals importants (festival de Gorée, du blues, de la jeunesse, festival international de folk). Il se produit dans de grands hôtels comme dans les salles plus intimistes et lors de grandes soirées ou évènements (Festar, les 50 ans de l'Institut Français de Dakar, soirée de gala avec l'Agence de Presse sénégalaise). En 2012, le groupe sort son premier album.

Mapathe Gaye was born in 1980 from a walo-walo father (of Fulani origin) and a leboue mother. He was only two years old and sent to Dagana (region of St. Louis) with a paternal aunt who will be in charge of raising him. It is here that he will be introduced to what makes his life today: music. To understand his inspiration, we must look at the city of Dagana, the capital of Wallo, characterized by its ethnic and cultural mix. Mapathe ensures that this melting pot in which he bathed his childhood influenced him in his musical tastes.
In 1998, fallen in the hip-hop fashion, he formed a band with friends. But perfectionist, he realizes that he lacks some essential basics and he entered the conservatory in Dakar in 2000.
Five years later, Mapathe comes out as a guitarist and composer. With his lessons and experience, he excels in the art of blending the sounds of jazz and rhythms and blues, the melodies and harmonies of the Sahel sounds. He began playing solo with his guitar in bars and restaurants of Dakar. After some success by Youssou Ndour, Baba Maal and Ismael Lo, he played his own compositions very quickly. In 2007 he formed the band "Hampaté & Sahel-Blues", a mix between his real name and Mapathe Amadou Ba Hampaté, a personal tribute to a champion of African oral culture, and Fulani in particular, this great sage of the Sahel.
Since then, the group travels Dakar and its surroundings, present in all the major festivals (Gorée festival, blues, youth, international festival of folk). It occurs in large hotels as in more intimate rooms and during large parties or events (Festart, 50 years of the Institut Français de Dakar, gala evening with the Senegalese Press Agency). In 2012, the band released their first album.
