The Celtic music of Ireland and Scotland has continued to increase in popularity for the past several years.  One of the groups spearheading this popularity is the international touring and recording group Golden Bough.  Besides the music of the better known Celtic countries of Ireland and Scotland, Golden Bough will also perform music from the lesser known nations of Wales, Cornwall, The Isle of Man, French Brittany and Galicia in Spain.  The concert will be held at the Winona Grange.

Since 1980 Margie Butler and Paul Espinoza (co-founders of Golden Bough) have recorded and performed the music of the Celtic lands, along with their own compositions.  Last year they spent time in Galicia in Spain to research the Celtic music of that province.  For their Forks performance Golden Bough will perform pieces from Galicia, as well as music from the other Celtic lands.

The newest addition to Golden Bough's line-up is violinist Kathy Sierra, whose vibrant energy, exquisite fiddling and dulcet vocals compliment the singing and playing styles of Butler and Espinoza.  Sierra began her violin studies at age 5 in Hawaii and made her debut with the Honolulu Symphony at age 7.  She earned her BA degree in Drama with an emphasis on music from Principia College in Elsah, Illinois. Upon graduation, Sierra was presented with the College's Francis Van Der Meid Smith Music Award for outstanding musicianship.  She brings a passionate approach to the group's music and a fresh dynamic to their stage performance.

For more than thirty years, Golden Bough has brought their music to enthusiastic fans throughout the United States and Europe, as well as Japan.  Their interpretation of this music has made them a favorite with audiences on both sides of the Atlantic, gaining critical acclaim and enthusiastic support from folk fans wherever they perform.

The music of Galicia is the latest to be added to Golden Bough's ever-growing Celtic repertoire.  Galicia is one of the few areas in Continental Europe that has been able to maintain its Celtic culture. With melodies similar to Irish and Scottish music, the Galician music also incorporates the rhythms of Spain, giving it an exceptional flavor of its own.  With a dazzling array of acoustic instruments and haunting vocal styling, this trio of modern day minstrels presents a program that leaves little room for audience members to lose interest. Blending their voices in three-part harmony they sing ballads, lively sing-alongs and beautiful acapella pieces and back themselves with the Celtic harp, guitar, penny-whistle, recorder, violin, viola, octave-mandolin, accordion, and bodhran (the Irish hand drum).

The Celtic nations share a long history of culture and fine arts and their music often intertwines to create the powerfully emotional sound of what we now call Celtic music.  Golden Bough was founded with the concept of combining this music with various folk styles, highlighting their own compositions. For the past two decades, long before the current craze caught on, Golden Bough has been delighting audiences with their exceptional interpretations of the music of the Celtic nations.

In the recording studio, as well as on stage, Golden Bough captures the essence and joy of traditional folk music and captivates audiences with the uniqueness of their original compositions. The music of Golden Bough is enjoyed by listeners of all ages and you'll be hard put to sit still once the fire of the Celtic music is flamed by these fine musicians. A splendid time is guaranteed for all!
