3/19/16 (Staunton) "The Fantastic Style: Instrumental Virtuosity from Biber to Bach"
This bold, all-instrumental program evokes gypsies dancing, bagpipes droning, hens clucking, and soldiers marching to war - all inside of some of the most virtuosic music of the early Baroque. Characterized by short contrasting sections, rhythmic freedom, and unpredictable harmonies, these works by Biber Schmelzer, and Bertali epitomize the "stylus fantasticus" or "fantastic style" that began in Italy and reached its pinnacle in Buxtehude and Bach.
Violinist and Co-Artistic Director David McCormick will present a pre-concert lecture one hour before each performance of "The Fantastic Style". The lecture is free to all ticket holders.
