Cuba Perspectives: A Conversation with Carlos Eire

Participating in the conversation with Professor Eire will be Dan Rosenheck assisted by Olivia Lopez-Balboa.

Professor Carlos M.N. Eire, born in Havana in 1950 (PHD Yale 1979), is the Lawrason Riggs Professor of History and Religious Studies at Yale University. He is a historian of the late medieval and early modern age. In 1962, At the age of 11, Professor Eire fled from his homeland to the U.S. without his parents as one of 14,000 unaccompanied Cuban children airlifted by Operation Peter Pan (Pedro Pan). After living in a series of foster homes, he was reunited with his mother in Chicago in 1965. His memoir of the Cuban revolution, "Waiting for Snow in Havana" (Free Press 2003), won the U.S. National Book Award for non- fiction and has been translated into over a dozen languages-but is banned in Cuba. A second memoir, "Learning to Die in Miami" (Free Press 2010), explores the exile experience.

Dan Rosenheck is the data editor of The Economist. He served as the magazine's deputy Americas editor from 2010-2013, as its bureau chief for Mexico, Central America, and the Caribbean from 2009-2010, and as its Argentina correspondent from 2004-2009. His work has also appeared at New Yorker.com, in The New York Times, The New Republic, Vanity Fair Spain, Foreign Affairs Latinoamerica, Clarin of Argentina, El Heraldo of Honduras and numerous other publications. He is currently working on a book about baseball in Latin America.

Olivia Carret Lopez-Balboa, a 2015 graduate of Columbia University, has a deep interest in her Cuban heritage, Cuban history and current affairs and particularly in the history of the exodus of her grandparents and great- grandparents from Cuba.
