The Giants of Jazz on Film

L.A. based Mark Cantor, whose collection of jazz on film, the Celluloid Improvisation Music Film Archive, is one of the largest worldwide, will share gems from his collection in his upcoming show Giants of Jazz on Film on November 22, 2011, in WCUW's Front Room.

This is a special opportunity to view and hear historical jazz performances by the artists who were instrumental in developing jazz, and during the years they did so. Film clips from the 1910s to the 1950s will include early and rare footage of performances by such artists as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Benny Goodman, Ella Fitzgerald, Ina Ray Hutton, Charlie Parker and many others. Mark is acclaimed not only for his expertise on jazz history and film, but also for his entertaining and revealing profiles of jazz artists at work, and the personal, social and commercial challenges they often faced.

Mark presents his films worldwide and is an annual fixture at the Playboy Jazz Festival in Los Angeles where his shows typically sell-out. He has served as a consultant on a large number of music documentaries and feature films including Ken Burns' PBS series on the history of jazz.

You'll discover some hidden treasures of great jazz that you won't be able to see or hear anywhere else, and you'll have the opportunity to delve deeper during the Q&A sessions Mark always fits in.

All this in the intimate setting of WCUW's FRONTROOM on November 22nd.
