Native American Cultural Competency Training
>>> Presented by Native American Community Services of Erie and Niagara Counties, Inc. (NACS)

This two-day staff development training is designed to empower participants to become more effective when working with Native American people, focusing on Haudenosaunee (or, Six Nations Confederacy) communities in New York State and Southern Ontario (Canada), although much of this training is relevant to many Native communities.  

THE GOAL OF THIS TRAINING is to enhance the capacity of staff and organizations to become more culturally competent and to increase the ability of participants to effectively deliver services to Native Americans.  

Many of the challenges, obstacles, and trust issues that impact service delivery in areas such as health care, social services, education, and related programs are discussed.  

Participants are also provided with an introductory overview of traditional Haudenosaunee culture, with similarities and differences from other Native communities across North America.  

As many Native American communities experience high rates of health and social problems, this training provides the strategies, approaches, and programs that Native American Community Services is developing in order to improve the health and wellness of the populations served.

Topics that are addressed include:

* Overview of Native American Traditional Culture

* Contributing factors to health inequities among Native American Communities

* Specific strategies to enhance cultural competency


Participants will:
------------------------

* Gain and/or acknowledge a basic understanding of some elements of Native American culture, focusing on urban, Haudenosaunee people

* Learn how many Native communities are impacted by Historical Underpinnings and External Factors (as defined by the Socio-Cultural Model, developed by the NYS HIV Prevention Planning Group)

* Understand the varying degrees of cultural competency

* Learn and discuss specific suggestions to help build, maintain, and strengthen cultural competence within one's own setting

All training materials and lunch on both days is included in the registration fee.  Participants will be asked to complete a pre-training survey and bring the completed survey to the training to help measure the effectiveness of the training.

Participants should also recognize that, while this training explains some of the coping mechanisms and unhealthy behaviors found among some community members as well as some strategies to address these issues, this training does not provide a "certificate of being cultural competent."  Cultural competency is often facilitated and enhanced by participants' open-mindedness, willingness to consider new and/or alternative perspectives, and willingness to explore how each person's previous understanding of Native Americans may have been shaped by a Non-Native perspective.
