Musicians and Dancers of Jeh Kulu Dance and Drum Theater
The Dance Hall in Kittery will be alive with the sounds and movement of master Guinean artists Sidiki Sylla, Seny Daffe and a Seacoast favorite, Ismael Bangoura as they offer dance and drum workshops as well as an evening performance. Sylla, Daffe and Bangoura are all musicians and dancers in Jeh Kulu Dance and Drum Theater from Burlington, VT. The performance will feature members of the Seacoast troupe Ballet Kakandé as well as Sidiki, Seny, Ismael and special guest Boca Bangoura.
Ismael Bangoura, born in Guinea West Africa in 1975, has been musical director and lead drummer for Jeh Kulu Dance and Drum Theater since 1997. He has been studying music since age nine, and primarily plays the djembe and krin. He arranges the music for Jeh Kulu dance and Drum Theater, provides live music for dance classes, and teaches regular drum classes in New Haven and Vermont.
Seny Daffe was born in Conakry, Guinea as well. He began studying dance and drum at the age of ten. He is a versatile musician and plays the many West African instruments including djembe, krin, bolon, gongoma, sangban, balafon and dunduns. He is a member of Jeh Kulu and regularly plans for Jeh Kulu dance and drum classes and assists with musical direction and choreography. He is a multi-talented and dynamic performer who is gaining a reputation around the US for his electrifying dundun playing and his powerful voice.
Sidiki Boze Sylla was born in Conakry, Guinea and was around music from a young age, accompanying his sister to her daily rehearsals from the age of nine. He participated in and won many local competitions in Guinea and ultimately joined one of the premier national dance companies in Guinea Guinea, Ballet National Djoliba. With Ballet Djoliba he toured extensively, performing throughout West Africa, as well as Europe, Asia and North America. He is currently the principal choreographer and Artistic Director of Jeh Kulu Dance and Drum Theater. He teaches well attended dance classes in the Burlington, VT area and also performs regularly.
Seacoast West African Dance and Drum drummer Alhassane Fowler-Camara, originally from Guinea and dancer Liz Fowler-Camara, a native New Englander work to share the beautiful music and culture of Guinea through regular dance and drum classes and performances. They teach weekly classes at the Dance Hall in Kittery, monthly classes at Awakening Grace Yoga in Epping as well as other studios in the area. Their small troupe of dancers and drummers, Ballet Kakandé, performs throughout the Seacoast.
