Chuckanut Radio Hour with Special Guest Ken Jennings author of Maphead
The Chuckanut Radio Hour is a radio variety show that began in January 2007. Each Chuckanut Radio Hour features a guest author and includes guest musicians, performance poet Kevin Murphy, Cascadia Weekly columnist Alan Rhodes, an episode of "The Bellingham Bean" serial radio comedy, and some groaner jokes by hosts Chuck & Dee Robinson and announcer Rich Donelly. The Chuckanut Radio Hour's first guest was Erik Larson and has since included William Dietrich, Elizabeth George, J.A. Jance, Sherman Alexie, Tom Robbins and Garrison Keillor, among many others. This month's musical guest is Walt Burkett of The Walrus. Doors open at 6:30pm, and you must be seated by 6:45pm as the show begins promptly at 7pm. Co-sponsored by the Leopold Residence. Our October guest will be author Ken Jennings for his new book Maphead: Chasing the Wide, Weird World of Geography Wonks.
It comes as no surprise that, as a kid, "Jeopardy!" legend Ken Jennings slept with a bulky Hammond World Atlas by his pillow every night. Each chapter delves into a different aspect of map culture: highpointing, geocaching, road atlas rallying, even the "unreal estate" charted on the maps of fiction and fantasy. He also considers the ways in which cartography has shaped our history, suggesting that the impulse to make and read maps is as relevant today as it has ever been. From the "Here be dragons" parchment maps of the Age of Discovery to the spinning globes of grade school to the postmodern revolution of digital maps and GPS, Maphead is filled with intriguing details, engaging anecdotes, and enlightening analysis. Ken Jennings was born in Seattle but spent much of his childhood in Seoul, South Korea. A graduate of Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, he worked as a computer programmer until becoming an unlikely celebrity due to his unprecedented record-breaking streak on the television quiz show Jeopardy!
