All proceeds from this event benefit the re-opening of Bindlestiff Studio, the only community-based venue in the U.S. dedicated to showcasing Filipino/Filipino American performing arts.

About the Film
AMIGO, the 17th feature film from Academy Award-nominated writer-director John Sayles, stars legendary Filipino actor Joel Torre as Rafael, a village mayor caught in the murderous crossfire of the Philippine-American War.
When U.S. troops occupy his village, Rafael comes under pressure from a tough-as-nails officer (Chris Cooper) to help the Americans in their hunt for Filipino guerilla fighters. But Rafael's brother (Ronnie Lazaro) is the head of the local guerillas, and considers anyone who cooperates with the Americans to be a traitor. Rafael quickly finds himself forced to make the impossible, potentially deadly decisions faced by ordinary civilians in an occupied country.
A powerful drama of friendship, betrayal, romance and heartbreaking violence, AMIGO is a page torn from the untold history of the Philippines, and a mirror of today's irresolvable conflicts.

Joel Rizalino De Leon Torre began acting in community theatre in his native Bacolod, Negros Oriental at the age of 7. He joined the movies in 1982 immediately after graduating De La Salle University, when he appeared in Oro Plata Mata, Peque Gallega's brooding tale of decadence and revolution. The film was a critical and commercial success and it brought attention of the industry to the young actor in his first starring role.
Since then, Joel has appeared in over one hundred movies, both mainstream and independent, as well as numerous television shows and TV series. Career highlights include Mumbaki, Batang Westside, Ataul for Rent, and Yanggaw. He can be seen in the movie Surviving Evil, a joint British and South African production, and the upcoming French Movie Identitie Exchange. He appeared in the off-Broadway production of Dogeaters at The Joseph Papp Public Theater in New York. Aside from acting, Joel has also directed for theater and television and is a co-producer for Amigo. He also owns a very popular restaurant, JT's Manukan Grille, which has four branches in the Philippines.

Originally opened in 1989, Bindlestiff Studio became the only permanent, community-based performing arts venue in the nation dedicated to showcasing Filipino American and Filipino artists. Bindlestiff continues to both cultivate cutting-edge artists and work that reflects the variety of Filipino/Filipino American cultures while providing the often-underserved Filipino American community access to diverse offerings (theatrical productions, music festivals, and theatre workshops).
