Dissolving Before Our Eyes: The Acidification of Our Oceans

Roughly one-third of the 70 million tons of CO2 we release into the atmosphere every day is absorbed by the oceans, where it reacts with seawater to form carbonic acid. As a result, our oceans are becoming literally corrosive. At that current rate of emissions, ocean acidity will more than double by 2100, enough to dissolve the shells and skeletons of key marine organisms such as corals, oysters, and pteropods (an important source of food for young salmon). Marine ecosystems are already suffering, and some of the most drastic changes are happening right here in our local waters, affecting iconic Northwest fisheries and marine life. Our conversation will explain the science, the environmental and economic consequences, and the political opportunities and challenges of ocean acidification.

Brian Baird, former United States Representative from Washington's Third Congressional District; Richard Feely, Senior Scientist at NOAA's Pacific Marine Environmental Laboratory; and Bill Dewey, Public Policy and Communications Director for Taylor Shellfish Company, will join us as we explore this important issue.
