Bridge & 'Roid Rage (2 Original One-Acts)
Write Act Repertory Theatre's Producing Artistic Director John Lant and Associate Artistic Director Ken Cosby are proud to present the World Premiere of 'ROID RAGE and BRIDGE by Willard Manus.
This new world premiere work has a limited ten performance engagement at the Write Act Repertory Theatre, opening Tuesday, July 19th through Wednesday August 10th, 2011. ***EXTENDED THRU WED, AUG 17, 7:30PM***
The performances run Tuesday and Wednesday nights with shows on July 19th, 20th, 26th, 27th & August 2nd, 3rd, 9th, 10th, 16th and 17th, 2011. (Special Monday Presentations with the Alternate Cast will perform on Mondays August 1st and 8th.) All evening shows start at 7:30pm.
'ROID RAGE, a 15-minute monologue performed by Ilia Volok (alternate-James Black), is a sardonic and irreverent indictment of our self-absorbed culture of celebrity. Volok (Black) plays a professional athlete puffed-up on grandiosity and steroids who believes that to be less than famous means being something less than human. 'ROID RAGE is directed by Tommy Hicks.
BRIDGE, starring Jerry Boyd and directed by Kelly Galindo, is about a well-known jazz musician whose favorite place to practice is high up on the walkway of a big-city bridge. His nightly sessions are a creative and blissful experience for him--until his music begins to draw a succession of wounded souls who threaten to use his hideaway as a jumping-off point. BRIDGE is comprised of three separate scenes, in each one of which the musician finds himself locked in a life and death struggle with a suicidal person.
The plays will be performed on the same nightly bill.
'ROID RAGE and BRIDGE is presented at the beautifully rebuilt Write Act Repertory Theatre on the St. Stephen's Episcopal Church campus, located at 6128 Yucca Street in Hollywood, two blocks east of the famous Capitol Records building near Gower and Franklin, off the 101 freeway. Free ample parking is located one block away in the lower church parking lot at 6125 Carlos Avenue. The theatre, which features an outdoor patio reception area, is both air-conditioned and heated. Seating is limited. Refreshments will be available.
Produced by Anne Mesa, and John Lant, with Direction by Tommy Hicks and Kelly Galindo, Lighting Design by Ken Cosby (*appears courtesy of Actors Equity Association).
The inspiration for BRIDGE, confides the playwright, was the famed sax player Sonny Rollins who at the peak of his career stopped appearing in public and for two years did all his playing and practicing late at night on New York's Williamsburg Bridge.
Willard Manus has had numerous plays produced by Write Act Rep, including Blues for Central Avenue(2009) and Just A Song at Twilight (2010). Another play of his, Maxwell Street, recently premiered at the Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center in Leimert Park Village. Bridge was developed at The Actor's Studio Playwrights/Directors Unit.
