foolsFURY presents: inkBoat Workshop
Great ensemble theater performances don't happen overnight. They take hours of rehearsal, utilizing unique approaches to training as diverse as the artists in this year's FURY Factory lineup. FoolsFURY invites you to take a peek into the world of these dynamic artists to see what makes them tick. No previous training necessary.
You must be at least 16 years or older to play.

Dancing the line between life and form, hold many images in the mind at the same moment. To live, forget it all.  We utilize basic principles of energy relations found in martial arts and pre-industrial dance forms.  We challenge our personal reality, revealing beauty, humor and the grotesque.  Working in groups, duets and solo, we practice listening to interior and exterior impulses, eliminating the distinction between the two.  Muscles fatigue.  Focus shifts and clarifies.

About inkBoat:
Founded by Shinichi Iova-Koga in 1998, inkBoat is a performance collective built by and with the collaborative efforts of choreographers, dancers, musicians, visual artists, directors and actors.
Working in fractured, filmic, delicate and decayed environments, inkBoat's performances evoke both the traditional and the experimental, drawing heavily from movements (political, artistic, personal) of challenge. Each performance is a dialogue between the apparent and hidden worlds.
All collaborators are independent visionaries that assemble according to project parameters. Living in San Francisco, Berlin, New York, Tokyo and Seattle, these artists contribute to projects as called upon.  Whether site-specific or in a theater, the surrounding environment plays a key role.
inkBoat has been supported by numerous venues, including Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (SF), ODC(SF), Japan Society(NY), Red Cat(LA), Dock 11(Berlin), Fabrik Potsdam(Germany), and Schloss Bröllin(Germany).  Funding supporters include Rockerfeller MAP Fund, New England Foundation for the Arts, The Wallace Alexander Gerbode Foundation and The William and Flora Hewlett Foundation, National Endowment for the Arts, Japan Foundation, Dance USA and the Zellerbach Family Fund.

About Shinichi Iova-Koga:
Shinichi examines, dissects and intentionally blurs the line between various media to uproot and communicate stories contained within the body. He founded inkBoat in 1998 and has been recognized with 3 "Izzie" awards, 1 "Goldie," and a "Top 25" in Dance Magazine.  Shinichi has engaged in long term and extensive work with Yuko Kaseki, Cassie Terman, Yumiko Yoshioka, Do Theatre and Sleepytime Gorilla Museum.  Single project collaborations include work with Ko Murobushi, AXIS Dance Company, Minako Seki, Degenerate Art Ensemble, ODC Dance Company, ROVA Saxophone Quartet and Anna Halprin.
In December 2011, he and Dohee Lee are featured in a new inkBoat production at ODC Theater.  Many thanks to his teachers Hiroko Tamano, Yukihiro Goto, Ruth Zaporah, Yumiko Yoshioka and Anna Halprin. Thanks to the funders (see website: www.inkboat.com).  Shinichi is currently an Artist in Residence at ODC Theater, SF, teaches dance at Mills College in Oakland, and is the father of Zoë and husband to Dana.
