FIRST FRIDAY Music Series @ Galeria West with COMPAS in concert
Hundreds of music lovers have enjoyed the FIRST FRIDAY Music Series concerts, presented by TEATRO Si at the intimate Galeria West Art Gallery, located at 111 Quimby Street in downtown Westfield, NJ. This once a month live concert event continues to bring to the area a unique opportunity to enjoy a diversity of music genres as performed by a select series of acclaimed artists.
The FIRST FRIDAY events continue on Friday, May 6, 2011 at 7pm when the lively music quintet COMPAS brings to the First Friday music concert series audience an evening of popular Latin American rhythms and more.
COMPAS, which translates to rhythm, founders Adrienne Riofrio and Dario Scholis have created an ensemble that performs popular Latin American compositions from a variety of genres. Bombo, Cuban Son, Cumbia, Ecuadorian Folk, Colombian Folk, Merengue, Bachata, Boleros, Cha-cha-cha and more are performed in a style that is reflective of popular gatherings of song by friends and families throughout Latin America.
Adrienne Riofrio grew up immersed in classical music and folkloric music from Ecuador, her parents' native country. When she relocated to New Jersey and started playing music with her cousin, Dario, COMPAS was born. Adrienne is fulfilling a dream of performing, and using her classical and folkloric violin training to express herself with COMPAS.
Musician and fine artist Dario Scholis, a native of Quito, Ecuador was influenced by his musician father and began playing guitar when he was 12 years old. By the age of 18 he was an in demand performer and guitar instructor.  He relocated to the United States in 1981 and has been a member of various music ensembles.
Erik Feder has been playing drum set and percussion for over 30 years and is thrilled to be playing percussion with COMPAS. Erik majored in world and classical percussion performance at Rutgers University, studying with Steve Machamer and Jim Thoma. Erik studied rock, jazz, classical and world music drumming (often combining them) with Kenwood Dennard (Dizzy Gillespie, Brand X, Manhattan Transfer) and Jay Dittamo. Erik can be heard playing both drums and percussion on CDs from the bands E Motive, The Rob Sbar Noesis and Clint Smith's Obliteration of the Self.
Juan Pablo Gutierrez is a native of Colombia. He has toured South America and much of the United States as the bass player for Bata-Son. He is an accomplished musician that brings to COMPAS a special Latin American rhythmic touch.
John Acevedo was born in Richmond, Virginia with an influential Colombian family heritage.  He started playing violin at age 4 and later learned to play piano, guitar, tres, congas, bongo and bass.  His passion for Cuban son and salsa music drove him to start a very successful Latin Band in Richmond, VA called Son Quatro in 2001. His passion for percussion has led him to COMPAS.
We hope you will join us often during the year to celebrate the arts in a unique setting. We recommend that you consider enjoying a fine meal before or after the concert at one of the fine eateries in quaint downtown Westfield and the surrounding area. Most are located within a short walk from the gallery. Proceeds from each event benefit theatrical programming efforts at TEATRO Si, a 501(c) 3 New Jersey not for profit corporation.
