Bay Area Comedy Invasion
Arena Theater will present an evening of LGBT comedy featuring top comedians from Oakland, Berkeley, San Francisco and Healdsburg.
Headlining the evening will be Sampson McCormick, an award-winning, black, openly gay stand-up comedian, writer and activist who tirelessly crusades against homophobia, poverty and youth homelessness.
He's been touring the country performing comedy since 2003, and although he fits into a double minority category, being both black and gay, he refuses to be defined by these portions of his identity. He has performed with notable entertainers such as Patti LaBelle and RuPaul and is the author of two books, "Taboo Village: A Perspective On Being Gay In Black America" and "Ebonic Faggotry". Critics have called his comedy shticks "riveting, refreshing, original, conversational, bold, conscious, intelligent, honest and good news." His take on life, religion, sexuality, politics, family and society leaves audiences doubled over in laughter.
Host/Emcee: Steve Ausburne's comedy career started with MC/Host work for friends with bands. His first attempt at actual standup ended up with him getting a lifetime ban from a church in Grant's Pass, Oregon so a pretty successful start! Since then, Steve has embraced the stage as a place to present a spoken word memoir of all the embarrassing moments that lurk in places that only standup or therapy sessions can reveal. Steve now frequents showcases in California's Bay Area including a 3rd place finish in the 2014 Sacramento Comedy Festival and participation in the 2015 SF Sketchfest. Also, he is allergic to cats.
Featuring: Ash Fisher is a comedian, actor and writer who does not want to be a comedienne, an actress or a writeress. Switched at birth and raised on the East Coast, she has since found her home in Oakland, California and performs standup all over the Bay Area. Where she co-produced the 2014 Hella Gay Comedy Festival in Oakland and San Francisco. She has featured for Sampson McCormick at Win River Casino and produces and hosts the weekly Gay For Days Comedy Show at Club 21 in Oakland.Ash also writes about all things queer, funny and Oakland for Wear Your Voice Magazine. Ash holds a B.F.A. in Theatre from NYU's Tisch School of the Arts, and Sallie Mae will never let her forget it.
Cheryl White is the creator and cohost of Date Talk, where she is looking for love and podcasting the leftovers. As a bountiful redhead with can't miss jokes, she leaves her audiences slightly confused, a little smarter, and definitely satisfied. Cheryl has appeared at the Redwood Comedy Festival, the iO West Comedy Improv Festival, and the Eagle Rock Comedy Festival, and performs at venues all over California.
