Los Master Plus & G-Flux at Tropicalia
Doors 8PM

They're baaaaaaack! The dynamic showman duo 'Los Master Plus' had their first gig in hometown Guadalajara, Mexico back in 2010 and haven't stopped touring since. It all started with the idea of mixing its members' whirlwind of eclectic taste in music in a project that was fun, fresh and straight up party inducing. One side of the band is perhaps the most representative aspect: the folklore of Mexican popular rhythms such as cumbia and norteño, along with the outfits and special kind of clever and colorful speech that goes with it. On the other hand there is the influence of foreign genres such as electronic music, rock and hip hop. The combination of it all spawns styles coined by the band as 'Cumbiatrónico' (cumbia + electronic) and 'Sabrosindie' (sabroso, Spanish word for "tasty" + indie).

The group's live shows are full of dance and celebration with a very special feel. You can hear cover songs that take the audience by surprise. Versions turned to cumbia of bands such as Kings of Leon, Radiohead, No Doubt and Daft Punk, but completely adapted to the folksy, playful kind of Spanish that represents a big part of Mexican culture. They also play unique interpretations of Spanish speaking bands such as Los Teen Tops, Joan Sebastian, Jeans and Los Huracanes del Norte. Los Master Plus do not limit themselves to cover songs, their self produced tracks such as 'La Cumbia del Pero', 'La Ultima Coca del Desierto' and 'Mamarazzi' are also sang and danced cheerfully by their audience. 'El Comanche' and 'Larry Mon', the two members of the band, keep the crowd interactively entertained and make every presentation an unforgettable experience, a completely fun show where it's almost impossible not to dance.

Los Master Plus have played more than 25 cities all over Mexico with a huge success. They have also taken their live show to some of the most important cities in the U.S. such as New York, Chicago, Los Angeles, Houston, Philadelphia, Miami, Austin and many more; obtaining a great response from both latino and american audience. Among bands and artist that have shared stage with the band are: Molotov, Kinky, Nortec, Celso Piña, Toy Selectah, Datarock, Mike Laure Jr., Sussie 4, Jumbo, Kid Sister and Modest Mouse.

DJ sets by DC's own G-Flux! Born and raised in Mexico City, Gustavo Naranjo didn't become space cumbia producer G-Flux until he relocated to the United States. It was the year 2008 and electronic, sample-based cumbia was the new cool thing happening all over the continent. Through the internet Gustavo first contacted with what was going on in his hometown's nu-cumbia underground and soon enough up-and-coming artists starting requesting his services as a remixer/producer. Thus, "El Ciclón Del Caribe" was born, a collaboration with DF's cult cumbia duo Afrodita that would end up becoming one of the biggest hits of the genre, and the first track Gustavo signed as G-Flux.

G-Flux was new to cumbia, not not to music production. Since he moved to Washington, DC over a decade ago, to study music production he has been involved in several projects, such as Pascha and Antifaz, focusing on down-tempo and lounge, jazzy electronica (Antifaz's music has been featured on TV shows such as Law and Order Dexter, The Glades, From Spain With Love and national TV Commercials for McDonalds, Nintendo and Jimmy Choo ). Choosing cumbia was a political statement in itself, even if the lyrics aren't combative," explains Gustavo, "because of the place that cumbia has in Latin America as the music of the working classes. It's the most democratic of all genres."

After the success of "El Ciclón Del Caribe," G-Flux has kept busy doing remixes and releasing his own productions of digital compilations and through blogs, earning considerable internet exposure. Fans started demanding a G-Flux album, a proper official release. That's G-Sound: a collection of some of the best collaborations and remixes signed by G-Flux, plus four previously unreleased tracks. G-Sound includes guest appearances by Mexico's Los Master Plus and Afrodita, Canada's Boogat, DC's Empresarios, and Peruvian chicha guitar legend Jose Luis Carballo, among others.
