Celtic Women
RICHMOND WOMEN'S CHORUS TO PERFORM "CELTIC WOMEN"
Concert Sunday, May 22, Features Irish, Scottish, Welsh Favorites

Richmond, VA  Richmond Women's Chorus, the area's premier female vocal ensemble, will perform favorites from the British Isles during "Celtic Women," its final concert the season, on Sunday, May 22, at VCU's Singleton Center for the Performing Arts.
Lilting, hauntingly beautiful Celtic music has enjoyed recent and well-deserved resurgence in popularity. "Riverdance" continues to be a world-wide phenomenon after a decade, and the international touring show "Celtic Woman" features music from and inspired by this rich, beautiful, and exciting music tradition.  Irish and Scottish immigrants to America have had a profound impact on American music, particularly bluegrass and country music.
"My great-great-grandfather was from Ireland, and all of his seven children played fiddle, inspiring a love of music that was passed to his children and generations beyond," says Tim Gillham, founder and artistic director for the Richmond Women's Chorus.  "Our 'Celtic Women' concert will include traditional and new music from the British Isles that we hope will transport your heart directly to those bonny, bonny banks of legend."
"Celtic Women" will be presented Sunday, May 22, at 4:00 pm at the Singleton Center for the Performing Arts, 922 Park Avenue, in the heart of Virginia Commonwealth University's Monroe Park Campus.  Tickets are $15 in advance ($10 for students and seniors) and can be purchased online at www.monumentcitymusic.org; $20 at the door.
Richmond Women's Chorus was founded two years ago, following the success of its "brother" organization, the Richmond Men's Chorus, which was founded by Gillham in 2001.  The two groups perform separately, and sometimes together, in both concert and cabaret settings in venues throughout the greater Richmond area.
Founder-artistic director Tim Gillham has degrees from the University of Central Arkansas, and has done post-graduate work at Old Dominion University and Virginia Tech.  His choirs have received superior ratings at regional, state and national festivals, have performed with Debbye Turner (Miss America 1990) and Marlo and Danny Thomas in a nationally distributed St. Jude's Children's Hospital video, and won the North American Music Festival.  He has directed the Petersburg Festival Chorus, the Richmond Choral Society and The Society Singers, which performed under his direction at Washington National Cathedral and for the American Choral Directors Association.
Mr. Gillham is active as an adjudicator and arranger. He served as organizer for the Alexander Paley Music Festival, and has prepared the Paley Festival Chorus in 2000 and 2001. He is also a Member of Phi Mu Alpha Professional Music Fraternity and American Choral Directors Association. He is involved in Richmond's theater scene as a musical director and performer for Richmond Triangle Players, On The Air Radio Players at WCVE, Henrico Theater Company, Dogwood Dell and The Landmark Theater.
On-street parking for the concert is available on a first-come, first-served basis on the streets surrounding the Singleton Center. There are also two nearby VCU parking decks that provide all-day parking at a rate of $5 for visitors: the West Broad Street Deck at West Broad and Harrison streets (three blocks north of the Singleton Center) and the Bowe Street Deck (two blocks west on West Broad Street at Bowe Street).
More information about the Richmond Women's Chorus, as well as a calendar of upcoming performances can be found online at www.richmondwomenschorus.org.
