CELEBRATING ARMENIAN CULTURE

Musical Performance: 1915-2015 Truth & Hope

Ara Dinkjian on 'Oud, accompanied by String Quartet & Tamer Pınarbaşı on Qanun

In commemoration of the Centanary of the Armenian Genocide, Alwan for the Arts is pleased to present a special series celebrating the enduring arts and culture of the Armenians, who, despite their collective tragedy, have become a generous and integral part and active voice in the tapestry of world cultures, and specifically in the Middle East, where they have carved a special place for Armenia in the hearts of all Middle Easterners.

In this concert, renowned Armenian-American 'oudist and musician, Ara Dinkjian pays special tribute to the tribulations and reslience of the Armenian people with a new album of Armenian songs entitled 1915-2015 Truth & Hope. Dinkjian, on 'oud, will be accompanied by a string quartet and guest musician, Tamer Pınarbaşı on qanun.

The evening's repertoire will consist of songs which deal directly or indirectly with the Armenian Genocide, including songs of mourning, the resting of the souls of the departed, soldiers, and prayer. These are well-known Armenian folk songs, Armenian sacred music, and pieces written by Ara Dinkjian, however with unique arrangements.

Tickets: $20 General Admission

Doors open at 7:30 pm

Ara Dinkjian launched his musical career at the age of five, mastering the doumbek drum to perform in the 1964 New York City World's Fair. A graduate from the Hart College of Music, where he studied piano, guitar and darbuka, Dinkjian received his degree with a specialization in the 'oud. Founding member of the band Night Ark, which focuses on classic Anatolian musical stylings with jazz, Dinkjian became world-renowned with the multi-platinum hit "Dinata", a mix of Balkan, Greek and Armenian music, which was performed by the world-famous Greek folk singer Eleftheria Avarnataki at the closing ceremony of the 2004 Athens Olympic Games.

As a songwriter, Dinkjian's music has been recorded by numerous musicians including Gülşen, Kibariye, Mine Koşan, Ahmet Kaya,Coşkun Sabah, Burcu Güneş and others. Dinkjian's fluid compositions reflect his familiarity with a wide array of musical traditions, from Armenian and Greek folk music to American Jazz, and his mastery of the 'oud keeps him in high demand at music festivals throughout the world.
