Director's Production Lab: Taking Your Directing to the Next Level
DIRECTORS! Expand Your Horizons with Our Fall Intensive

Take advantage of this unique, debut Director-focused workshop with foolsFURY's Artistic Director, Ben Yalom.
Develop a project from beginning to end in this structured production and performance process with lots of personal attention and mentorship.

A rare opportunity to focus on developing your directing skills with foolsFURY Artistic Director, Ben Yalom. This workshop will provide techniques, strategies, and insights to create truly innovative theater. Public performance and rehearsal space provided. This is an excellent opportunity to showcase your directing talent and/or explore new skills in a supportive environment.
Throughout the workshop we will explore ways of expanding and articulating your artistic vision, and learn to use contemporary theater tools such as the Viewpoints in conveying narrative and creating structure. We will dissect traditional notions of directing, discard those that don't serve, and look at innovative models to approach creation. Each student will direct a short piece, and be coached through the process, with a public performance.
3 intensive weekends of class time plus public performance showcase
Limited class size of 8 directors.
Receive personal attention and individual feedback throughout the process. Each director benefits from Ben's mentorship in the process of bringing your vision from inception to the stage. One-on-one coaching sessions, rehearsal space and performance/tech are included.
About the Instructor:
Ben Yalom is the Artistic Director of foolsFURY, a San Francisco based physical theater ensemble. Ben has directed many foolsFURY productions including Doug Dorst's acclaimed MONSTER IN THE DARK, the English Language premiere of Fabrice Melquiot's THE DEVIL ON ALL SIDES in San Francisco and New York, Don DeLillo's VALPARAISO, the West Coast premiere of Martin Crimp's ATTEMPTS ON HER LIFE, Tony Kushner's adaptation of Pierre Corneille's THE ILLUSION, and many others. In 2005 he directed the controversial musical BANGERS FLOPERA with Inverse Theater in the New York Fringe Festival and the New York Musicals Festival ("One of the top three musical of the NY Fringe" American Theater Web; "Outstanding New Musical" Talkin Broadway, Summer 2005 citations). With San Francisco's Traveling Jewish Theatre he directed Naomi Newman's award-winning one-woman show FALL DOWN GET UP. Ben has also worked with A.C.T., the Bay Area Playwright's Festival, the Magic Theatre, Playground, the Aurora Theatre, and Encore Theatre (San Francisco), and Theatre Ange Magnetique (Paris).
Ben is a graduate of the renowned Iowa Writers' Workshop. His fiction, essays and translations of plays have appeared in magazines nationwide. His play THE STRANGE CASE OF THE JENSEN FILES was produced as part of the 2005 FURY Factory festival of ensemble theater. In 2005 Ben received the prestigious Creative Work Fund for his translation and direction of Melquiot's THE DEVIL ON ALL SIDES.
Ben teaches playwriting and performance at California College of the Arts. He has also taught at NYU/Tisch, Stanford University, Vassar College, and the Berkeley Rep School of Theater. He is a long time member of the Theater Services Committee at Theater Bay Area, and is an active member of the Network of Ensemble Theaters. He is currently working on a book with Mary Overlie, creator of the Viewpoints technique.

Tuition: $600, $550 Early Bird Discount by September 30th.
Fee INCLUDES tech time, professional theatre venue and up to 10 hours additional rehearsal space (directors must provide additional rehearsal space, if desired).
