Lauren Sheehan with Tillamook Burn & Mark Graham - an Evening of Roots and Blues
SFS is pleased to present Portland-based Lauren Sheehan with Tillamook Burn and Mark Graham at Phinney Center on March 7th at 7:30 PM. Music critic Stephen Winick, described Lauren in a recent Huffington Post article: ".... in the Elizabeth Cotten/John Hurt vein... a one-woman Americana jukebox... her fingerwork and sensitive singing, Piedmont picking....all sounds deceptively easy, which is a testament to her huge talent and hard work."

She clearly loves and inhabits the music she performs, shape shifting through the moods of the familiar and the obscure, howling with the werewolf and weeping with the willow. Her gifted guitar work, stylistic breadth and vocals are inspired by her study with elders, oral tradition and scholarship. With all of that tradition behind her, she re-creates the intimacy of a back porch, where singing and playing were regular events.

Recent appearances on NPR, four CDs that charted in the top 20 on folk radio, a 2012 Portland Music Award for outstanding achievement in Folk, inclusion in the Library of Congress as part of the MusicBox project and her most recent accomplishment as guitarist for the CD, The Light Still Burns, companion to the history book Kalamazoo Gals; A Story of Extraordinary Women & Gibson's "Banner" Guitars of WWII, attest to her growing significance as an artist, performer and teacher.

Lauren and her daughter Zoë Carpenter collectively known as Tillamook Burn, will delight with collaborations from their recently released eponymously titled EP. The new release is receiving healthy airplay on Folk stations across the nation.

Lauren will also be playing with Mark Graham, harmonica and clarinet player extraordinaire. Mark hails from Vashon Island, and is known to Seattle audiences from collaborations with Orville Johnson in the "Kings of Mongrel Folk," and "The Brainstormers" with Tom and Patrick Sauber. One of the few harmonica players schooled in the melodic and rhythmic intricacies of Southern string band music, Mark Graham plays in a powerful but lyrical, blues tinged style that recalls the feel of the finest banjo and fiddle playing. With over 35 years of harmonicizing, Graham has gained an encyclopedic knowledge of American country and blues styles. The song writing of Mark Graham is a singular universe of surreal mountain hilarity and lonesome terror that covers the big subjects: The Creation of the Universe, Natural Science, Mathematics, Food, Greed, Eternal Doom and Festival Love.

Tickets are $16, ($2 discount for members, students and seniors), $8 for youth. Day of show tickets at the door are $2 more.  March 7th, 7:30 PM, 6532 Phinney Ave N (Lower Brick Building).
