Événement

Ikons in Sound: The New Monastics
Central City Chorus, directed by Phillip Cheah, continues its 34th season with "Ikons in Sound: The New Monastics," an evening of works by John Tavener, Arvo Pärt, Henryk Górecki, Igor Stravinsky, and Geoffrey Burgon. The performance will be held at St. Ignatius of Antioch Episcopal Church on West 87th Street between Broadway and West End Avenue in Manhattan on Saturday, March 14th at 8:00 p.m.

John Tavener, together with Arvo Pärt and Henryk Górecki, was well-known for his minimalist compositional aesthetic with a distinctly religious or mystical subject focus. His untimely passing in 2013, just a couple of months shy of turning 70, was a tremendous loss for the musical world. Using Tavener as a point of departure, this concert explores his musical sensibilities juxtaposed against that of Pärt and Górecki as well as Stravinsky (whose music influenced Tavener's early compositions) and Burgon, a contemporary composer and fellow Brit.

In addition to familiar Tavener favorites like "Today the Virgin", "The Lamb", and "Mother of God, here I stand", the program also delves into some of his lesser known works like "Birthday Sleep", two (of three) of his settings of "The Lord's Prayer", as well as a haunting setting of "The Tyger" which recalls the musical material of "The Lamb" at the climax of the work. Other pieces include Pärt's beloved setting of the "Magnificat", Stravinsky's Latin settings of "The Lord's Prayer" and "Hail Mary", Burgon's ethereal setting of the "Nunc dimittis" (which was written for the end credits of the 1979 BBC mini-series Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy), and Górecki's popular "Totus tuus".

Tickets for "Ikons in Sound: The New Monastics" are $25 ($20 student/seniors) at the door, $20 in advance. To order tickets, please visit www.centralcitychorus.org.
