Ruth C. Kahn has participated personally and professionally in the disability community for more than 30 years; the arts are her life-long passion.  Among the people who most inspired her are her late husband Paul Kahn, whose poetry she'll be reading this evening. Ruth, as a new masters degree level board certified music therapist, is looking forward to working with adults with dementia and those with physical disabilities.  Prior to her studies at Lesley University, Ruth has worked in the disability and arts communities as an access coordinator, theatrical audio describer, and open captioner. Presently, Ruth sings as alto section leader at Union Church in Waban and with Journey Songs, a hospice choir.

Paul Kahn (1945-2010), poet, artist, writer, and activist with a disability, was born in Boston in 1945, with a rare neuromuscular disability. While studying visual art at Boston University where he received a BFA, Kahn became an activist in the independent living movement.  In 1980, Kahn met Ruth Stern, who would become his frequent collaborator and wife of 21 years.  When Kahn's physical condition weakened after 1987 and he became dependent upon a ventilator, his creative focus shifted from art to playwriting and poetry. The last two decades of his life were remarkably productive, resulting in over twenty often-produced plays and dozens of published essays and poems, including in Breath & Shadow and Wordgathering. The W.E.B. Dubois Center at U. Mass./Amherst maintains an archive of his art and manuscripts: http://scua.library.umass.edu/umarmot/kahn-paul-s

Janna Maria Fröhlich, as part of HeartSoulVoice ensemble, performs with her voice, harp, guitar and keyboard, along with Joy Grimes, fiddle.  This evening will feature Janna alone with her angelic voice and folk harp.  Janna is a board-certified music therapist, recently receiving her MA in expressive therapy at Lesley University, as well as a singer-songwriter and was the longtime soprano soloist until 2013 at First Church in Jamaica Plain, which houses the Eliot Street Soirée. Her background includes a Master of Fine Arts in Early Music from Sarah Lawrence College and many years performing Medieval and Renaissance music with several local groups. She is currently harpist with Cappella Clausura, a choral ensemble specializing in music by women composers of the last millenia. Janna's repertoire features an eclectic mix of original and improvisational songs, and folk- or classically inspired tunes.  [Photo, courtesy of Sergio E. Basta] www.soundcloud.com/janhapharp
