"Tsuki no Usagi" The Rabbit in the Moon, GenRyu Arts' 15th Anniversary Concert
The theme of GenRyu Arts' 15th Anniversary concert, "Tsuki no Usagi", is the story of the Rabbit in the Moon.

This full evening concert will feature the newly commissioned work entitled "Tsuki no Usagi", commemorating the centennial of the Angel Island Immigration Station where over 60,000 Japanese immigrants passed through AIIS from 1910-1940.  We celebrate the continuing legacy of artistic, social and cultural linkages between Japanese and Japanese American cultures. The concert will feature the company's core performing ensemble, guest artists Hideko Nakajima (shamisen/3 string Japanese lute, accordion and voice), Tatsu Aoki, (taiko, shamisen, acoustic bass) and special guest master shamisen artist from Japan, Chizuru Kineya. Also featured will be the intergenerational membership of Genryu Arts' taiko school.

GenRyu Arts was founded as Gen Taiko in 1995 and incorporated as GenRyu Arts in August 2008 (501c3). Its mission is to promote, present and participate in Japanese and Japanese American culture through Taiko (Japanese Drumming) and other traditional and contemporary music and dance forms.  Deeply rooted in San Francisco's Japantown and in the Asian American Community, GenRyu Arts engages in art-making that merges the Japanese cultural forms of taiko, dance and folk songs with new music, spoken word and visual design into singular expressions that honor community heritage and address key issues stemming from the legacy of internment and redevelopment.
