Breath Made Visible

Arena Theater has announced a one-time showing at 4:00 PM on Sunday July 18 of Breath Made Visible, a feature length documentary by Ruedi Gerber about the life and career of Anna Halprin, one of the founders of the American avant-garde in modern dance. Halprin will introduce the film and accept questions following the film.
Anna Halprin is a dance pioneer who founded the San Francisco Dancers' Workshop in the 1950s. Since her diagnosis with cancer in 1972 she undertook the definition of a creative process integrating psychology, body therapies, and education with dance, art, and drama, as a path toward healing and resolving social conflict. Her late husband, landscape architect Lawrence Halprin, was one of the original designers of The Sea Ranch, where Halprin maintains a home.
Breath Made Visible (2009, 80 min., not rated) is a cinematic portrait which blends interviews with counterparts such as the late Merce Cunningham, archival footage of Halprin's career, including her establishment of the first multiracial dance company in the U.S., and excerpts of recent performances such as "Parades and Changes" at the Georges Pompidou Center in Paris. The result is a stunning, inspiring account of one of the most important cultural icons in modern dance. The film won the Audience Award at the 2009 Mill Valley Film Festival.
Tickets for this one-time showing are $8.00 and will be available in advance at www.arenatheater.org until 4:00 PM July 17, the day before the screening. If still available, tickets will be the same price at the door.
