El Mundo | Program Four, 43rd Indianapolis Early Music Festival
The Indianapolis Early Music Festival is proud to present El Mundo, a chamber music group specializing in music from Spain, Latin America and Italy. Under the direction of guitarist/lutenist Richartd Savino, El Mundo will offer a program titled¡Zarzuela y mas! This program will consist of Sebastian Duron's baroque zarzuela Salir el Amor del Mundo, excerpts from the Jesuit Mission opera San Ignacio, and selected 17th century tonos humanos.
The zarzuela is a dramatic musical genre that is particular to Spanish culture. Originally named after the Philip IV's hunting retreat outside of Madrid, where some of the earliest productions took place, the zarzuela evolved at approximately the same time as did Italian opera, and shares a number of characteristics with its musical cousin. What separates zarzuelas from their Italian opera counterparts is that beyond the sung music they also contain sections of spoken dialogue accompanied by dramatic stage action.
Loosely translated as Cupid's Final Folly, Salir el Amor del Mundo was first performed in Madrid in 1696. This work is a comical account of Cupid's confrontation with the chaste huntress Diana and is a marvelous example of Spanish baroque musical theatre.
During the 17th & 18th centuries Latin American cathedrals, missions, and courtly life demanded a varied and active musical scene. The indigenous populations were frequently drawn into the arts and participated in their production. The musical result was a style that even in sacred compositions bears the imprint of folk music.
San Igancio is a product of this highly developed musical culture and tells the story of an encounter between Saint Ignatius and Saint Francis Xavier. It comes and comes from a Chiquitos mission in an area now belonging to Paraguay, Bolivia, Argentina and Brazil. Composed in the early 18th century this work exhibits elements of Italian opera (recitative and da capo arias) combined with a folkloric style.
Featured singers will include sopranos Jennifer Ellis Kampani, Nell Snaidas, mezzo soprano Deborah Rentz Moore, bass, Paul Shipper, and a 6 member all-star instrumental cast.
