Southern Rail at the Homegrown Coffeehouse
The holidays are in the rearview mirror, the weather is cold -- time to crank up the Bluegrass Express at the Homegrown. If any Bluegrass band could be called a "perennial Homegrown favorite", Southern Rail is it. Their music is upbeat, high voltage vintage Bluegrass, featuring stunning instrumentals, powerful gospel quartets, and a world of onstage fun. They feature: Jim Muller on guitar and lead vocals -- born and raised in Richmond, Virginia, Jim's rich, distinctive lead vocals and offbeat humor have become one of the group's trademarks. He's also a polished flat-picker, about as slick as they come. Sharon Horovitch on upright bass -- aggressive, creative and irrepressible, Sharon is known for her infectious smile, her limber bass work, and her tenor and high-baritone harmonies. Banjo player Rich Stillman is back from a brief sabbatical - A bluegrass banjo for over 30 years, Rich has founded or been involved with of a number of influential bluegrass bands, including the Jersey Travelers, WayStation, and Adam Dewey and Crazy Creek. Rich was New Jersey banjo champion in 1983, New England banjo champion in 2002 and 2003, and a six-time winner of the annual banjo contest held in Lowell. Mandolin player John Tibert, hailing from Northboro, MA, is a prolific songwriter whose mandolin playing is fluid, lyrical and from the heart, and his superb bass vocals are a powerful addition to the group's signature quartet harmonies. Southern Rail's songs have appeared on Bluegrass Unlimited's Top Thirty Singles. Their gospel CD Glory Train, was nominated for Best Gospel Recording of the Year by the International Bluegrass Music Association.
