ALBUQUERQUE CHAMBER SOLOISTS PRESENTS A CONCERT OVER 2 YEARS IN THE MAKING!
PLEASE NOTE OUR NEW START TIME OF 2:00PM!

This concert was originally scheduled for May of 2020, but we had to cancel it due to the pandemic. We are happy that we were able to gather a stellar group of musicians to bring you this wonderful program a little over 2 1/2 years after our original date!

Guillermo Figueroa joins an all-star lineup of musicians for a program of chamber music for strings that spans a period of almost 100 years - the earliest piece was composed in 1824 and the latest in 1920.

The concert opens with the lovely Terzetto in C major, Op. 74, for the unusual combination of 2 violins and viola by Antonin Dvorak. It was originally intended as a parlor piece for himself as violist, a violinist colleague and his student. When the part for the student proved to be too difficult for him, Dvorak wrote a simpler work for him and saved this piece for a later premiere. While written for only two violins and viola, the Terzetto is a fully fleshed-out work with contrasting themes, a lively Czech Furiant, and a complex set of theme and variations. Performers for this work will be violinists Megan Holland and David Felberg, and Guillermo Figueroa on viola.

Cellist James Holland and bassist Aaro Heinonen will join forces to present the delightful Duo for cello and bass by Gioachino Rossini. While Rossini is best known for his operas, he did occasionally write music for strings. This particular work was written in 1824 for the amateur cellist Sir David Salomons to perform with the famous bass virtuoso Domenico Dragonetti. It is a virtuosic work full of Rossini's characteristic drama and charm.

Born just 5 years after Brahms, Max Bruch's long life and career ran parallel with Brahms and Wagner and later coexisted with Stravinsky and Schoenberg's early forays into atonality. Best known for his violin concerto, Scottish Fantasy, and Kol Nidrei for cello and orchestra, Bruch's chamber music has been unjustly overlooked, including this final String Octet, published posthumously in 1920. While the avant-garde was prominent at this time, the Octet is resolutely Romantic and 19th-century in spirit. Brahms is the clear inspiration in this piece, which features a bass instead of a second cello and employs lushly Romantic themes and traditional compositional techniques and forms. Our performers will be Guillermo Figueroa, David Felberg, Megan Holland, and Valerie Turner, violins; Laura Tait Chang and Laura Steiner, violas; James Holland, cello, and Aaro Heinonen bass.
