The NY Opera Forum presents Faust composed by Charles Gounod in concert at Central Unitarian Church in Paramus, NJ. Faust is ultimately a beautiful French opera without the heavy overtones of the original story by Goethe. Librettist: Jules Barbier and Michel Carré
Faust, an aging scholar, has devoted his life to studying. As he reflects on his life, he feels that nothing has come of his devotion. He contemplates suicide and, as he is about to do so, he curses God and asks the devil to appear. Mephistopheles, the devil, appears and tempts Faust with an image of a lovely young woman, Marguerite, and Faust makes a deal with the devil. The deal will make Faust young again, give Faust life on earth and in return, Faust must spend eternity in Hell. Faust lusts after Marguerite and wins her over with little care of the consequences others will face. When Marguerite becomes pregnant, Valentin, her brother, challenges Faust to a duel. Faust ends up killing Valentin. Marguerite later kills her child and is imprisoned. Faust and Mephistopheles tell Marguerite they will get her out. Marguerite, refuses and leaves her fate to be in the hands of God. Her faith eventually saves her and she ascends to heaven. With the struggle between religion, moral value, and sin, its story is intensely theatrical.
New York Opera Forum was founded by Richard Nechamkin in 1983 to give classically trained singers the opportunity to learn and perform standard operatic repertoire in the original languages. Complete operas are performed in concert with piano accompaniment, scenes programs are either in concert or staged with minimal props and costumes, and occasional showcase and lieder recitals are presented.
