Wellesley College Theatre VIRTUAL CABARET!
Welcome to the Zoom Zoom Room - our inaugural cabaret space to honor the work we've done over these past wintry weeks!
Our course goals:
Storytelling Through Song: An Actor's Introduction to the Art of Cabaret
This course invites the developing student of acting to approach the solo interpretation and performance of song as a powerful storytelling medium. Artists such as Édith Piaf, Bertolt Brecht/Kurt Weill, Eartha Kitt, Barbara Cook, Lea Salonga, Justin Vivian Bond, Martha Graham Cracker and more will provide inspiration and context for our practical work. In addition to reading, viewing, listening and evaluative assignments, visits by working professional actors in the musical field may enhance our exploration throughout the course. In-class/synchronous master classes rehearsing songs-in-progress should be expected weekly. Students will learn to apply acting philosophies and performance techniques from Wesley Balk and more to disentangle the voice from the body and expand their avenues of physical expression, while preparing the imagination through lyrical interpretation and even character development. Students will get the in-joke "do you have an uptempo?" as they learn the constitutive elements of the cabaret genre. Students will propose multi-song plot narratives for an imagined one-person cabaret show, while considering how this underground art provides a liberating space for representation and expression. Each student will ultimately prepare one number chosen from that envisioned evening of sung storytelling for public performance. (<----THAT'S WHAT THIS IS!)
