Overview:
What makes Black children joyful? Thats not something we typically ask.
Black Boy Joy is a social and spiritual practice of refusing systems of whiteness and white supremacy. It is saying no to the terms, codes, rules, and laws that subjugate Black males. Within these disavowals, Black males create spaces of affirmation where they are felt, heard, seen, and matter.
Black Boy Joy seeks the reclamation of Black stories, voices, and identities through the arts and humanities.
Moreover, Black Boy Joy is the refusal to passively wait for a future that envisions Black humanity, as it provides the possibility to live unbounded lives.
Black Boy Joy gives Black males the future(s) that they want now.
Facilitated by Dr. Amir Gilmore, an unapologetic Black professor of Cultural Studies and Social Thought in Education at Washington State University, this workshop explores Blackness, the blurring of Blackness, the joys of Blackness, the joy of Black boys.
Why I Should Attend:
The laws of white supremacy has subjugated Black males for centuries. It has told us how to dress, how to speak, how to act. Its terms, codes, and rules have tried to kill the Black soul. Yet... we are still here.
Black Boy Joy is a revolution of the mind. Designed to rupture oppressive social structures that make Black boyhoods socially unimaginable, this workshop focuses on how we can create a space where Black males and Black voices are felt, heard, seen, and matter.
Join us for this 90 minute intensive in which we create a new narrative about Black masculinity based on positivity, celebration, and joyful childhood memories.
