WHAT IS WORLD VOICE DAY?

Each year at World Voice Day the vocal health experts of Duke Voice Care Center help people learn about how the voice works, how people can keep their voices healthy and strong, and what to do if they have a voice problem. World Voice Day is an international day of celebration of the human voice. Singers, actors, teachers, and preachers need healthy voices to do their jobs, and we all need our voices to connect us to each other. Duke Voice Care Center has led North Carolina's observation of World Voice Day (WVD) since 2007. The theme of WVD 2020 is Every Voice Has A Story, which will provide multiple opportunities for people to learn about how to confidently tell your story with a healthy voice.

THE MONTI

This year, we are excited to celebrate World Voice Day with our guests of honor, The Monti! The Monti is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization whose mission is to create community through the telling of stories. They've been selling out shows in NC since 2008, helping people craft their stories and giving space to share their unique voices. The Monti will be the eleventh recipient of the Patrick D. Kenan Award for Vocal Health & Wellness. Visit their website at http://themonti.org/

DUKE VOICE CARE CENTER & THE PATRICK D. KENAN AWARD

Designated as a Duke Center for Excellence in 2006, Duke Voice Care Center is a specialty practice in the Department of Head and Neck Surgery & Communication Sciences. The Duke Voice Care team includes laryngologists (ENT doctors with special training in caring for voices), speech-language pathologists, and clinical singing voice rehabilitation specialists (speech-language pathologists who are also performers and voice teachers) who work collaboratively to evaluate and treat voice problems.

In 2010, Duke Voice Care Center announced the establishment of the Patrick D. Kenan Award for Vocal Health and Wellness, to be presented annually to those whose lives and careers increase awareness of the importance of the human voice. The award pays tribute to the legacy of a dynamic and ambitious Duke physician and performer, Patrick D. Kenan. Duke Voice Care Center was formed in large part as a result of Dr. Kenan's vision for vocal health.

Previous award honorees have been American Idol winner and country music sensation Scotty McCreery, Grammy-nominated jazz vocalist Nnenna Freelon, international opera star bass-baritone Simon Estes, Broadway performer Lauren Kennedy, Soul Ingredients® founder Dr. Trineice Robinson-Martin, National Public Radio broadcaster Carl Kasell, Grammy-nominated singer/songwriter Tift Merritt, the Triangle-based band Delta Rae, Durham's all-male chorus 100 Men In Black, and YOGAVOICE teacher Mark Moliterno.

ARE YOU INTERESTED IN TELLING YOUR STORY?
Duke Voice Care Center and The Monti want to hear the story of your voice. Selected participants will receive free coaching from DVCC and The Monti in the month leading up to World Voice Day, and will present their stories during the Masterclass portion of the event.

WE WANT TO HEAR about how your voice has impacted your life or others around you. "Voice" can have several meanings, including the feeling of personal empowerment, sense of self, speaking for a group, or the physical voice. What's the story of your voice? How do you relate to others with your voice? When did you have an opportunity to make your voice heard? How has your voice helped you engage with the world around you? Have you ever struggled with a voice problem or voice injury? What does your voice mean to YOU?

IF YOU ARE INTERESTED, please send a video file or a link to an accessible YouTube video to: worldvoiceday@duke.edu. Please include your full name and contact information in the email. The DEADLINE TO SUBMIT YOUR STORY IS MONDAY, FEBRUARY 17. Those who are selected to share at World Voice Day will be notified by Monday, March 2. Submissions should be no more than 2 minutes long and will represent a portion of your overall story. Selected storytellers will present their full story (approximately 5 minutes) during the World Voice Day Masterclass.
