Farallon Quintet at the Swedenborgian
The Farallon Quintet is composed musicians who have performed as principles in symphonies and orchestras at every level - local, national, and around the world. It is the only professional chamber music group focused exclusively on the repertoire for clarinet quintetstring quartet plus clarinet. In addition to playing the classics, the quintet seeks to perform rarely heard works, innovative arrangements, plus fascinating and delightful new music by living composers.
With over 50 existing clarinet quintets to choose from, the group performs widely diverse and dynamically engaging programs from its repertoire. This Bay Area ensemble takes its name from the Farallon Islands, located right off the coast of San Francisco. In addition to being a landmark location close to where the players live and work, its meaningpillar or steep rock in Spanishindicates the groups vision to become an important pillar or rock in classical music by building awareness around the rarely-heard clarinet quintet repertoire that is increasingly significant musically. The Farallon Islands also represent the groups inspiration which is founded in the simplicity and beauty of nature. In fact, the group is known to intersperse rehearsals with hikes in the mountains and road trips all with the intent to discover the natural beauties of Northern California.
This concert is one in a series benefiting 3 local causes: Nature in the City, which engages residents in butterfly, bee, and wildlife habitat restoration projects in diverse San Francisco neighborhoods; Young Womens Choral Projects of SF, which transforms girls lives through choral music education and performance; and Canine Companions for Independence which enhances the lives of people with disabilities by providing highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support.
The venue is the architecturally acclaimed Swedenborgian Church, a national historic monument, and a hidden gem of early Arts&Crafts design from 1895. With unadorned wood panels and ceiling supported by raw madrone trees as posts embodying the simplicity and beauty of nature, this acoustically enchanting, candle-lit place of worship has seating for only about 100.
