Overview:
Similar to discussions of spirituality in education, the idea of spiritual literacy and religion is often elusive and can create discomfort and tensions especially within work with young children.
So why is spirituality and religion an important part of anti-bias education?
Why do we as educators avoid the topic?
How are religion and culture inexplicably tied together?
How does this area of diversity intersect with race, immigrant status and other identities?
If you havent considered religion as a critical aspect of equity, havent considered religion and spirituality a part of anti-bias work, or are worried about recognizing these issues in your work with children and families, join us on Feb 8th, 2020!
This expansive day will be full of interactive activities, discussions, and ideas to integrate a cultural wealth/funds of knowledge into your curriculum and program in culturally sustaining ways.
Why I Should Attend:
Children often have questions such as "What happens when I die?" or introduce thoughts and beliefs from their home life into the classroom. This workshop offers a series of thoughtful practices to develop your curriculum, practice, rituals, and program through a social-emotional and equitable lens.
This workshop is based off of a November 2019 issue of "Young Children," a journal published in NAEYC's award-winning, peer-reviewed journal focused on educating children from birth through third grade.
About the Presenters
Debbie LeeKeenan MEd, (she/her) is an early childhood consultant and lecturer (www.antibiasleadersece.com) in Seattle, Washington. Debbie has been an educator for over 45 years and worked with Carolyn Edwards at the University of Massachusetts Lab School from 19861993. She was also a long-time director/lecturer at the Eliot-Pearson Children's School at Tufts University. debbie.leekeenan@gmail.com
John Nimmo, EdD (he/him) is an Associate Professor, Early Childhood Education, in the Graduate School of Education at Portland State University, Oregon. From 2003 to 2013 he was Executive Director of the Child Study and Development Center and Associate Professor of Human Development and Family Studies at the University of New Hampshire. John was a recipient of the Social Justice Award and the Excellence through Diversity Award at UNH. In addition to presenting nationally and internationally for almost 30 years, he has been a visiting scholar at universities in Ghana and Australia. Formerly he was core faculty in teacher education and human development at Pacific Oaks College Northwest in Seattle.
This event is FREE for for all eligible City of Seattle Department of Education and Early Learning (DEEL) early learning partners in the Seattle Preschool Program (SPP), the SPP Pathway Program, ECEAP and City of Seattle DEEL Early Learning Staff.
