Minnush EP Release Party
Minnush was born out of Gina Sobel's apprenticeship to Susan Gaeta through the Virginia Folklife program. Gina studied the Sephardic musical tradition with Susan - in particular the music of Sephardic legend Flory Jagoda, who was Susan's teacher.
Both Gina and Susan have backgrounds in jazz and American folk music, and they decided it was time to introduce this incredible body of Sephardic music to a broader audience. They brought in bassist Trevor Pietsch and percussionist Kevin Johnson, and infused the music with their own styles. They also tell an important story through the music. This isn't just for Ladino speakers or Jewish audiences. This is immigrant music and refugee music, and as such, is relevant to anyone who has ever left home, forcibly or of their own volition, in search of a better life.
In Dec 2018, Minnush gathered at Richmond's Minimum Wage Recording and recorded a 6 song EP with engineer Lance Koehler. Now they are releasing their new/old Sephardic music into the wild, and are excited to celebrate the occasion with you!
