Did you know there are over 500 known historic cemeteries in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, some dating as far back as the 1600s? Many of these important historic sites are located within the boundaries of the Four Rivers Heritage Area. Perhaps you have one on your property, or have seen one in your neighborhood. Join us at the Galesville Community Center on June 8, 2019, for a fascinating and interactive discussion of historic cemeteries. Many of these cemeteries are unmarked and hiding their secrets, remembered only through oral history, while many more are still awaiting rediscovery. At this half-day symposium you will learn how local historians, genealogists, conservationists, and archaeologists unlock the secrets of these historic cemeteries and find out what measures are in place to protect these important commemorative landscapes of our past. Experts in history, archaeology, conservation, preservation, genealogy, and archival research will share their work and discuss best practices in the field to inspire preservation of cemeteries in the Four Rivers Heritage Area. Topics will include researching and documenting old cemetery plots, archaeological methods, legal issues, and physical threats related to climate change and development. After brief presentations by the panelists, each session will end with a brief Q & A session, so come with your questions. Attendees are also encouraged to bring their own research and discoveries related to historic cemeteries for sharing and discussion over the lunch hour. Conference attendees will also receive a Field Guide to Historic Cemeteries in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, a resource for the public on studying and caring for historic cemeteries. As a special and exclusive opportunity for registered conference attendees, the Quaker Burying Ground Trustees will open the Quaker Burying Ground in Galesville for guided tours between 1:30 and 3:00 pm. Stroll through the oldest cemetery in Anne Arundel County, discuss management challenges with the Trustees, observe conservation challenges, and learn stories of those who are buried there. Timed entry for groups of 12 every 15 minutes. Please register for a timed entry slot when you register for the conference. (Tours are weather dependent.)
