Stabat Mater
Tickets are $10-$15 online

Pergolesis musical setting of the Stabat Mater hymn has been one of the most celebrated sacred works since it was composed in 1736. Its depiction of the suffering of Mary during The Crucifixion mirrors Pergolesis own suffering, as it was written on his deathbed. The performance takes place during Lent, on the anniversary of the composers death. A small string ensemble and harpsichord accompany soprano Joyce Yin, and mezzo-soprano Hayden DeWitt. The program will also include a trio sonata by Archangelo Corelli.

The performance takes place at the beautifully renovated Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church, located two blocks west of the 30th Avenue Station on the N or W line. Free parking is available on site and the venue is accessible by wheelchair.

MEET THE PERFORMERS

Soprano Joyce Yin, praised by New York Concert Review for singing with an otherworldly quality, brings a committed physicality and depth of emotional connection to the stage. Earlier this year, Joyce gave a "stunning" performance at the historic United Palace Theatre (Voce di Meche) in Cantamos: A Celebration of Spanish-Language Song, joined the Downtown Symphony as the soprano soloist in the Messiah, and presented a lecture concert on Spanish Baroque music with Cantanti Project and Dorian Baroque. Past highlights include Bach's Wedding Cantata, Vaughan Williams' Dona Nobis Pacem, the Messiah with the Buffalo Philharmonic, Vivald's Nulla in mundo pax sincera with the Jubilee Orchestra, and Ines in the American premiere of Donizettis La Zingara with Amore Opera. Joyce is a winner of the Musical Merit Foundation of San Diego and a recipient of the MONC Auditions Audience Choice Award (San Diego). She received her M.M. in Opera Performance from Arizona State University and currently resides in New York City. Please visit @joycesings on social media, www.joyceyin.com for updates.

Mezzo-soprano Hayden DeWitt is best-known to New York audiences as a member of the beloved early music ensemble Opera Feroce, with whom she has co-created and performed a wide range of work since the group's inception in 2010, most notably the pasticcio opera Amor & Psyche, which has received nearly forty performances to date. With local opera companies she has been seen in standard and not-so-standard repertoire ranging from Endimione in Cavalli's 17th-century farce La Calisto to Cherubino in Saverio Mercadante's bel canto masterpiece I Due Figaro to Der Komponist in Richard Strauss' Ariadne auf Naxos. She has premiered works by New York composers Mark Ettinger and Ishmael Wallace, and recently collaborated with Thea Cook of The Donizetti Society on a staged and costumed cabaret of rare bel canto arias titled Stella nemica, infausta. In addition to her love for opera and concert, Hayden is a passionate church musician. She cantors at several Roman Catholic churches in New York and is a frequent guest soloist at the Tenth Church of Christ Scientist in the Village. Besides her work with Opera Feroce, Hayden has performed early music concerts with Siren Baroque and Anima, and is pleased to make her debut with Dorian Baroque.

Dorian Baroque, Inc. is a Queens-based ensemble of musicians who perform on period instruments, presenting orchestral, chamber and operatic music ranging from the early baroque period to the present. Now in its seventh season, Dorian Baroque is making Queens its official home, bringing performances of early music performed on original instruments to western Queens. The ensemble made its debut in June 2012 and is a gem in the early music landscape of New York City, recognized for its unique programming and highly sought-after guest artists.
