Marin Baroque presents Sylvestris Quartet playing "Church and State"
ATTUNED: A NON-CONCERT EXPERIENCE is the Bay Areas new and unique invitation to the world of Classical music. Curated by sister ensembles Agave Baroque and Sylvestris Quartet in collaboration with the California Jazz Conservatory, each program invites you to enjoy a cabaret-style show along with a multimedia experience and narration that brings you the stories behind the music.

Your program is a ballot (a butterfly ballot, perhaps?), the music is democratic, and frequently spiritual and, the reception is the concert! Borne from the church, and a microcosm of democracy, the string quartet has captivated listeners and composers alike for over two-hundred years. It is no coincidence that the very moment that Haydn was innovating the compositional form coincides with the age of the great democratic political experiments of the late 18th century, a product of the philosophical Enlightenment. Haydns publisher asked for him to publish his 1787 work The Seven Last Words of Christ for string quartet, as well as orchestra. More than two hundred years later, John Tavener wrote his old-music inspired Mother of God, Here I stand for choir and organ, but arranged it for strings. "Church and State" explores this musical-political-spiritual thread, as always on gut strings, and through a collage of works from the late 1780s to the early 2000s.  Works by Bach, Beethoven, Britten, Pleyel, Saint-Saëns, Schmelzer, and Tavener.

Artist/Group Bio(s)
SYLVESTRIS QUARTET is the San Francisco Bay Areas new historically informed string quartet, performing music from the entire gut-string era that is, from the 17th century up through World War II (and beyond). Sylvestris in known for programming that explores the cyclical nature of music, looking forward through the veil of history. Violinists Anna Washburn and Tyler Lewis, violist Aaron Westman, and cellist Gretchen Claassen play with many of the nations leading period instrument ensembles, including Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, American Bach Soloists, Bach Collegium San Diego, and Agave Baroque, and hold degrees from Juilliard, Indiana University School of Music, Boston University, and the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. Now in their third season together, Sylvestris just released their debut album The Good Song, Fauré in the 1890s featuring baritone Harry Baechtel of Portland State University, pianist Michael Seregow of Ball State University, and an incredibly beautiful 1869 Érard piano. Recently, the quartet has performed on IntermusicSFs Chamber Music Day and Presidio Sessions, Barefoot Chamber Concerts, at the University of Oregon and Portland State University, Pacific Music Works Underground (Seattle), Westhaven Center for the Arts (Trinidad), Resonance and Fifth Street Farms series in Berkeley, as well as a live performance for a studio audience on 89.9 FM All-Classical Portland. In 2019, along with Agave Baroque and California Jazz Conservatory, they begin a new collaborative series called ATTUNED, and continue their series with Agave and Marin Baroque. The quartet was in residence at the 2018 Hawaii Performing Arts Festival, where they accompanied two operas and performed with pianist Ronny Michael Greenberg and soprano Jennifer McGregor.
