Coastal Concerts at UUFSD presents...Peter Sprague Trio
2/17/2019  Sunday, 6pm

Peter Sprague Trio
Benefit Concert for the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy

Where?
Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of San Dieguito.
1036 Solana Dr, Solana Beach, CA

The Concert:  Peter Sprague's trio celebrates the jazz tradition of improvisation. During the concert, they will explore the music of The Beatles, Stevie Wonder, Bob Marley, Jimi Hendrix, James Taylor, and Cream from a fresh jazz perspective. The result is familiar songs delivered in a new sonic light. And just to keep the palette of colors fresh and revolving, the group will play Georgia by Hoagy Carmichael or add in a Cole Porter beauty.

The trio includes Tripp (who is Peters brother) on saxophone who also doubles on flute, chromatic harmonica and percussion, and Leonard Patton, who sings up a storm all the while sitting on a cajon (percussion box) and playing rock-solid drum grooves. Peter plays a one of kind, double-neck guitar and has an array of special pedals on the floor that he adds in as needed. The music is contagious, the sound pulls you in, and happily the woes of the world ease up. Listen in!

The Cause:  The San Elijo Lagoon is a special place. The nearly 1,000-acre wetland is home to more than 1,000 species of plants and animals, and has seven miles of trails for running, hiking, dog walking, nature photography, and natural solace. The reserve is bordered by the cities of Encinitas, Solana Beach, and Rancho Santa Fe. The San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy is a Southern California nonprofit land trust dedicated to protecting and restoring the resources of San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve, its watershed, and related ecosystems for the benefit of current and future generations.

The Challenge:  Urban development severely impacts the sensitive habitats of the San Elijo Lagoon, its watershed, and related ecosystems. The land, waters, native plants and animals of the Lagoon Reserve, including threatened and endangered species, face constant threats.

The Progress:   For over 30 years, the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy has inspired conservation across North County San Diego. The Conservancy has acquired several parcels within the 979-acre reserve for the protection of threatened and endangered species. The Conservancy works with private property owners and local jurisdictions to minimize development impacts on lands and waters adjacent to the Escondido watershed. A biological management plan provides for continued restoration of the reserve and includes annual breaching of the lagoons inlet to create natural tidal flushing. It also cultivates and plants native plants while tackling invasive plant control.  Through its youth and community education programs, the Conservancy is taking a long-term approach to conservation of precious North County San Diego resources.

Support of the Cause: Consistent with the UUFSD Coastal Concert tradition, a portion of all ticket sales will help fund a local charitable cause. In this case, the donation will be made to the San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy to support its efforts to protect and restore the resources of San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve, its watershed, and related ecosystems for the benefit of current and future generations.

San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy, founded in 1987, is a Southern California nonprofit land trust for San Elijo Lagoon Ecological Reserve. Our members, and corporate and foundation members, help to support the protection of our cherished natural places.

For over 30 years, San Elijo Lagoon Conservancy, with our members, has inspired conservation across North County San Diego. Together, we provide pathways so that everyone can connect with nature, become watershed and wetland literate and take action on behalf of our lands, waters, and wildlife.
